Not an exam, a threshold
A useful thing to know about the Training Endorsement Workshop:
It isn't an examination. There is no pass, no fail, no deferral.
What the TEW is: a structured evaluation-for-learning process, run by a staff of TSTAs, to prepare and assess Certified Transactional Analysts for the move into provisional training and supervision roles. The staff can set written requirements you'll complete before signing your CTA TS or TSTA contract — but you decide whether you want to make that commitment at all.
That framing matters. The pressure isn't "will I pass?". It's "have I built the practice and the thinking that justifies stepping into this next role?".
The TAO6 exam prep workshops give you a chance to test exactly that against international peers — including TSTA faculty who've sat on both sides of the TEW table.

The teamed case study
A small detail in the TAO3 design that says something larger:
Your case study is paired. You write it with a coach partner from the cohort.
This is unusual. Most coach training assesses you alone — your case, your client, your reflection. TAO3 mirrors what it teaches: team coaching is rarely solo work. Senior team coaches typically work in pairs or trios, partnering with other coaches and facilitators to hold the complexity of the team-as-system (Hawkins, 2017; Thornton, 2016, Group and Team Coaching).
So the case study itself becomes a piece of co-practice. You meet your partner, contract with them about how you'll work together, navigate your differences, make joint sense of the team you're working with, and present together — orally — to the cohort.
It is one of the most challenging and most useful parts of the programme. The peer pair often becomes a thinking partnership that outlasts the cohort.

The real question behind the stated demand
The executive walks in. They tell you what they want to work on.
That is almost never the actual issue.
This is the craft of executive coaching: hearing the stated demand, sensing the real demand, and shaping a coachable contract that addresses both — without losing your client and without colluding with the sponsor.
It's also what we work through systematically on the TAO2 bootcamp coming to Edinburgh this October. The model is rigorous: how the presenting issue maps to the structural issue (Berne, 1961), how the drama between sponsor, client and coach plays out (Karpman, 1968), how to surface the organisational layer (van Poelje & de Graaf, 2023) — and how to convert all of that into a contract you can actually work with.
By the end of TAO2 you can do this in the present, under pressure.

The path to TSTA
The TSTA exam — the final accreditation in the transactional analyst pathway — tests three things in sequence: theory & ethics, teaching, supervision (EATA, 2025, Training and Examinations Handbook, §12.7.3).
By the time you sit it, you need to have built:
🔹 300 hours of TA teaching, 50 of them TSTA-supervised, 90 in your chosen field
🔹 500 hours of TA supervision, with at least two supervisees followed for 40+ hours each
🔹 45 hours of supervision-of-supervision, half of them live in-presence
🔹 100 hours of continuing professional development
The 45 hours of supervision-of-supervision aren't a box to tick. They're where you become the supervisor and trainer you'll be at the exam. They're also where you stop being the person you were when you signed your TSTA contract — and become someone who can hold the developmental space for others, ethically, under pressure, on your own (Hawkins & Smith, 2013; Carroll & Gilbert, 2011).
That's the work of a PTSTA supervision group.
