Ever wonder what feedback for learning is all about, and how to keep your kids motivated in their learning journey? 🤔

Feedback is a critical step in personal growth because it shows kids their journey, from where they have come from and where they need to go😀 Many people don’t like receiving feedback because it can be seen as another way to criticise and to pick apart their failures. But the three fundamental steps for giving feedback are appreciation, coaching and evaluation, and these steps help build strong positive feelings towards feedback👍. Afterall, feedback is meant to motivate and inspire, not to make one feel as though they are not improving! Here are some tips that I use at that will help you give feedback in a meaningful way, whether it is going over your child’s report card or homework or simply helping them remember simple routines⭐!

1. Highlight your child’s personal progress. Give out many ✨compliments✨ about how far they have come. It can be something as small as writing the numbers the right way around, but this shows the child that they are improving, even if they do not see it themselves 😊.

2. Focus on one thing that they can improve on. It is important to set realistic and clear expectations and goals 🥅. It can be very overwhelming when you have to think of every little thing you need to work on, and it can also be discouraging. For example, if I have a student who is working on improving their essay structuring, I wouldn’t give feedback on how to improve their handwriting or how they need to diversify their vocabulary. That feedback can be goals for the next draft.

3. Give feedback in the moment. It is easy to remember feedback when you can immediately apply it to your work✅. Plus, it gives the students a chance and opportunity to ask questions and to correct their work.

4. Compliment, encourage and celebrate🎉! The final step is very important because you don’t know how hard the child worked to improve. Any little milestone is an achievement, and it encourages them to always try because any little step forwards is worth being proud of 🥇💪

✍️A Writer's Way has started again! So far we have looked at the fundamentals of writing and easing our way out of the holiday fog, and into writing mode. The workshop consists of mostly secondary students, but all grades are welcome!

📖Last year we read 'Holes' by Louis Sachar, and the students are putting forward their choices for this year. Do you have any suggestions? Write them in the comments section below 👇

During our summer activities, we had so much fun 🌞!

We had one big project that we worked on every day which was making a paper-maché piggy bank 🐷 and other mini activities! To name a few activities, we made slime, used shaving cream to make marbled cards, and even did a STEM activity where the kids made a spaghetti tower out or spaghetti!
It was an absolute blast 🎉 🤗 🤪 what a way to start the summer!

The classroom door keeps getting beautified! Sometimes as a treat the students make homemade stickers and decorate the classroom 😊! And not only is it welcoming and bright, but it also shows what the sessions are like - filled with creativity and fun 🤩!

The new whiteboards are in! After asking my students what they felt the classroom was missing, I bought some individual whiteboards so that they can work independently and let's be honest, they are a lot of fun 😄

Sometimes we understand our own knowledge of a subject, if we are able to teach it to others. And sometimes, it's fun to have someone else teach you something new!
