Ingredient 1 | 🪨 Clay minerals: For the physical part we have added fertile clay minerals, which provide the basis for an optimal soil structure. This means that water and minerals are retained better; This is because the clay particles are negatively charged and the minerals are positively charged, so they hold each other together.


Ingredient 2 | 🪱 Organic material: For the biological part we have added organic material with extra microbial life. Soil life makes minerals and trace elements available to plants. They exchange these for sugars, which the plants produce via photosynthesis.
In addition, soil life is the real accelerator of photosynthesis, the process by which plants absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere and store it where it is useful!


Ingredient 3 | 🧪 volcanic rock dust: For the chemical part we added volcanic rock dust. This contains more than 60 minerals and a high content of nutrients and trace elements. It consists of at least 52% silicon and is rich in trace elements such as boron, manganese and copper. Through the weathering process it also contributes to additional CO₂ absorption from the air.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀!

Farmers store carbon in agricultural soils for the long term by using practices like cover cropping that promote biological activity underground. Cover crops foster diverse communities of nitrogen-fixing microbes (shown on the left). Using photosynthesis, the plants produce sugars, which enter the soil through the roots and feed the microbes. The excess sugars and the bodies of dead microbes attach to clay particles and soluble minerals to form stable, carbon-containing complexes called mineral-associated organic matter. In contrast, decaying plants and animals (shown on the right), form particulate organic matter. This type of organic matter breaks down more quickly and releases carbon, particularly when the ground is disturbed by tilling.

The soil equivalent of a faecal microbiome transplant and the effect of sprinkling rock dust are to both be tested at scale in tree-planting schemes to see if they can turbocharge the amount of carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere.

“If you look at both basalt and the microbiome injection, these are both natural processes that would happen anyway, but take decades. We are just trying to accelerate these natural processes.”
