Made in circular motions and repetitive gestures. When turning inward, in correspondence with materials, there are moments when a presence is felt. As if the space between is occupied by a consciousness, one which stares back.

One of my smaller paintings which will be on show during open studio of BANIER as part of GRAW .

Made during my residency at where I have been researching the growth patterns of things around me. My attention was tuned onto the spaces where one form ends and the other begins. What I aimed to make tangible was the membrane that holds the two worlds together, in constant tension.

This work is a part of a series wherein I explore the character of materials which are laden with meaning. Moving from water-based carriers to oil, I wished to make tangible the material which stirs within our planet and drives the expanding needs for energy, the black goop that earth bleeds. In excess I allowed it to flow and move on the surface which records the traces of our back-and-forward conversation, between material agency, noise and the unconscious. Charged with this energy I think of these paintings as membranes that are on the threshold between the definable and the ineffable.

Dark Wood ritual performed at in Eindhoven as a part of the ‚The 21st Century Alchemist’ exhibition. Documentation by Barbara Medo.

Dark Wood is an alchemical ritual born through a developing studio practice. The method, staring into the grain of a charcoal-coated surface, erasing without a predetermined image, letting the material itself suggest form, was originally a conversation between the maker and the medium. This public iteration, first realised during a fellowship with Baltan Laboratories, translates that intimate grammar into a shared space.
Participants enter a magical circle, a zone indicated by the scroll of paper, which is ruled by a different logic. A repetitive, synchronizing sound fills the room from a tape-loop, a scroll of blackened paper hangs before them. They are guided to choose a word, repeat it until meaning dissolves into vibration, and then to erase the charcoal by following the patterns that emerge from the noise. There is no intended outcome, no desired image. The hand moves in response to what the surface reveals, not what the mind imposes.
The instructions are simple but strict: lose yourself, don’t think, deduct, intuit, and yet no two traces ever resemble each other. When the conscious mind is occupied with the mantra and the ritual bounds, the unconscious speaks in a language before language. Figures, textures, and gestures surface that could not have been planned. The scroll becomes a collective map of inner terrains glimpsed in a state of heightened receptivity.
This records the first workshop in what I hope will be an ongoing cycle. The theory that underpins the method, alchemical stages, the role of the inner guide, the cut-up of perception, is gathered at athanor.one. For those curious, the only way to understand Dark Wood is to enter it. The ritual continues to evolve, and each participant leaves a mark that shapes what it becomes next.

In search of fertile soil we wandered a path which seemed straightforward, yet now it has started to deteriorate, leading to fallow ruins. Led astray into unknown lands, we found ourselves far away from the familiar path, lost in pitch dark forest. Not being able to define forms before our eyes, we become aware of all the potentiality that might be hidden in this darkness. It is incoherent noise, chaos, a microcosm of our awareness before language and material things. Stare into this grain long enough and you might for a moment see connections between points which create branching structures, you might see patterns, you might see figures, images, faces or creatures who also inhabit this forest.
