CHLAMYDIA
Chlamydia is a common s*xually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium *Chlamydia trachomatis*. It often affects the ge***al tract but can also infect the re**um, throat, and eyes.

Key Points:

-CAUSE: It is cause by *Chlamydia trachomatis*, an obligate intracellular bacterium.
- TRANSMISSION: Primarily through s*xual in*******se (vaginal, a**l, or oral s*x). It can also be transmitted from mother to baby during childbirth.
- SYMPTOMS:
- Often asymptomatic, especially in women (up to 70-90% have no symptoms).
- When symptoms occur, they may include:
- Women: abnormal vaginal discharge, burning sensation during urination, lower abdominal pain, bleeding between periods.
- Men: discharge from the p***s, burning during urination, testicular pain or swelling.
- If untreated, can cause serious reproductive complications like pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, and ectopic pregnancy.
- DIAGNOSIS:
- Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) on urine samples or swabs from the cervix, urethra, re**um, or throat.
- TREATMENT:
- Typically with antibiotics, such as doxycycline or azithromycin.
- Sexual partners should also be treated to prevent reinfection.
- PREVENTION:
- Safe s*x practices including consistent use of condoms.
- Regular STI screening, especially for s*xually active young people.
