MESSAGE OF GRATITUDE TO GOD, THE STRANGE DOCTOR, AND THE TWO LIFEGUARDS
On Christmas Day, 2019, Oniru Beach, Lagos Island, at 11 a.m, I plunged into the water to swim and I was in it for a total of 7 hours. Around 5 p.m., I joined a group for a game of “throw and catch” soccer in the sea. At some point during the game, I swam out to a point where I suddenly vanished beneath the water. Despite my frantic efforts to reach the surface, only my fingertips were visible. It seemed like my final moment.
Minutes passed, I still had not resurfaced from the water, then, a realization that struck the lifeguards and my soccer companions. I had disappeared into the waters.
The lifeguards scoured the water for me, their search spanned 15 minutes without success. With dwindling hope, they assumed I had succumbed to the waves, abandoning their quest and beginning to retreat.
But lo and behold, I serve a living God. Just as they were about to give up the search and leave the water, a miracle unfolded. The water carried my lifeless form and deposited me at the feet of one of the searching men, crashing against his left leg. At this point, if he waited a second, I would have been lost forever because the water attempted taking me off his feet back into the sea again.
A kind strange doctor performed CPR on me, helping me regain consciousness. He had me count and identify his fingers, reassuring me that I was okay to leave. However, a crowd had gathered. Feeling uneasy about the attention, I tried to leave. I can't recall if I properly thanked the doctor in the commotion.
The lifeguards wanted me to see their boss for some marine ritual, I declined. Some suggested I attend a Thanksgiving service at my church since surviving such an event was rare for someone of my stature.
In all, I offer my gratitude to God, the lifeguards, and the unknown doctor. I hope this message reaches them, conveying my immense appreciation. I deeply regret any negligence on my part that day, especially my ungrateful behaviour towards the lifeguard, influenced by their insistence on a ritual I couldn't comply with.
The story didn't end on that fateful day. two days later, my body turned black, and I found myself in Ikeja Medical Centre. What happened afterwards is a story for another day.
I have revisited Oniru Beach, enjoying the water cautiously without venturing too far. I own my life to God Divine and only He can kill or Save.
My name is Oluwafemi and I am fearlessly thankful for life.
Happy birthday to me!!!
