In a significant step toward advancing Nigeria’s circular economy, RecyclePoints has partnered with Rite Foods Limited to launch the Waste-Is-Naira (W.I.N) initiative — an innovative programme that transforms plastic waste into economic value for Nigerian households and communities.

Unveiled in Lagos with the support of key environmental regulators and industry partners, including the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and The Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA), the initiative establishes a structured system that allows residents to exchange used plastic bottles and beverage cans for cash rewards. Through RecyclePoints’ technology-driven collection infrastructure and digital tracking systems, the programme is designed not only to improve waste recovery but also to create a transparent and inclusive recycling ecosystem that benefits both the environment and local livelihoods.

The partnership underscores RecyclePoints’ long-standing commitment to building scalable circular economy solutions across Nigeria. By integrating community-based collection networks with corporate sustainability partnerships, the Waste-Is-Naira initiative is expected to recover more than 750 tonnes of plastic waste annually, while generating income opportunities for thousands of individuals across the recycling value chain—from informal waste pickers to logistics providers and recycling processors.

Speaking on the initiative, Ekuma Eze, Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Rite Foods Limited, emphasized that the programme reflects a broader responsibility by manufacturers to address post-consumer packaging waste. Through its collaboration with RecyclePoints, the company is helping to transform environmental stewardship into tangible economic empowerment.

For RecyclePoints, the initiative represents another milestone in its mission to demonstrate that waste, when properly managed, is not merely an environmental burden but a valuable resource capable of driving sustainable development.

One of our most outstanding initiatives to date is the Nigerian Waste-Pickers Relief Program (NWPRP) which is a post-covid economic empowerment intervention that leverages waste recycling to support the engagement and empowerment of informal
waste collectors to become independent and dignified waste-pickers by providing them with waste recovery assets like recyclables collection sacks, unique work apparel, personal protective gears (PPEs) and access to health insurance, financial literacy and materials handling trainings. The program was powered by Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP). This program facilitated our validation as a Top Innovator on Global Plastic Innovation Network (GPIN), which is a collaborative initiative launched by UpLink - World Economic Forum, in partnership with the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP).

The NWPRP Program has engaged and supported about 795 WastePickers across communities in Lagos and Owerri, leveraging the SOSO CARE platform to provide Health Insurance for WastePickers who monthly donated a little fraction of their recyclables to serve as premium for health insurance.
