Louis Braille simplified an existing 12-dot military code into the efficient 6-dot system in 1824. He went on to develop codes for letters, numbers, and even musical notation.

Though his system now helps millions read worldwide, Braille died before his invention gained official recognition in France. His remains rest in Paris's Panthéon alongside the nation's most honored citizens. 🇫🇷 👨‍🏫
