Peter Obi defects from LP to ADC

The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has officially declared for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Obi along with other political leaders from the South-East geopolitical zone, declared for the ADC today December 31 in Enugu, the capital of Enugu State.

Obi and the South East leaders stated that after months of consultations, they had decided to join the ADC and collaborate with other opposition leaders from across the country to “rescue Nigeria from the poor governance of the All Progressives Congress (APC)”.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on multiple counts bordering on terrorism, membership of an unlawful organisation, and incitement.

Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Wednesday in a tense courtroom packed with security operatives, lawyers and observers. The sentencing brings to a close the most closely watched trial in recent years.

In his ruling, Justice Omotosho held that the prosecution successfully established that Kanu’s actions and broadcasts contributed to violent attacks in parts of the South-East. The court ruled that the offences were “of a nature that threaten national security,” stressing that deterrence was necessary.

“The defendant, having been afforded every opportunity to defend himself in line with Section 36 of the Constitution, is hereby convicted.”

The Judge also ordered that Kanu will be kept in Protective Custody in any correctional facility in the country with no access to Mobile or Electrical communication devices.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed claims that he plans to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, describing the reports as false and misleading.

Atiku made the clarification in a statement issued on Thursday by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe.

The former Vice President clarified that his recent interview with the BBC Hausa Service had been misrepresented by sections of the media.

According to Ibe, a thorough review of both the video and transcripts of the interview, in the original Hausa and the English translation, showed that Atiku never stated, suggested, or implied that he intends to step down for anyone.

“What Atiku Abubakar clearly and unambiguously said was that young people, as well as other prospective presidential aspirants, are free to enter the contest,” the statement explained.

“He further stressed that if a young candidate were to emerge through a competitive primary, he would readily support such a candidate without any hesitation.”

The statement criticised what it described as “mischievous interpretations” of Atiku’s remarks, cautioning against stretching interpretative journalism beyond acceptable limits.

“For the records, therefore, the insinuations attributed to the Waziri Adamawa from his BBC Hausa interview are inaccurate and do not reflect what he actually said,” Ibe added.
