Another edition of Science Fun Day is about to unfold. Prepare to be amazed, inspired, and awestruck by the wonders of science.

This August edition will be a blast!!!

06/08/2021

Yes it's another edition of Science Fun Day 2.0. The last one we had in January 2020 was amazing and memorable. It was a discovery day, lots of ideas were born and we had great feedback from parents.

This edition promises to be fascinating as lots of ideas will unfold during the session.
The whole experiment will be simplified using easy-to-understand steps that will open a new pathway of thought as they go through the session and also watch relevant documentary.

In this hands-on and minds-on activities we will be demonstrating basic technique of how electricity is formed and shared into various homes.A simple storyline of Mr Electron will be used to explain the basic concept of electric charge.

Do not worry your kids are safe as we will be using DC power from batteries.

Looking forward to having your wards experience this real life science.

Everything that was created by man was first imagined.

In the last post we talked about providing our kids with tools that can enhance their imagination, this is one of such tools.
It's highly recommended for imaginative play and creativity.

It's STEM approved.

Science has impacted our everyday life. It has ignited our sense of thinking and reasoning.

When we think,we ask questions.
Children are driven by constant curiosity to seek simplest explanation to complex facts. Their imagination questions a lot of things.

Giving them the right environment and engaging activities prompt their thinking, observation and the ability to express their imagination.

Imagination=creativity=invention

Indeed parenting is a journey. It's a journey filled with ups and downs, excitement and nervousness, anxiety and frustration.

The dream of every parent is to ensure he/she raises a responsible, resilient, independent, and compassionate child.
To genuinely do all these,it takes a whole lot of commitments physically, morally, financially and emotionally.

Emotion seems come last on mind but its an important psychological phenomena that affects our mood and perception of situation in different circumstances.

Negative emotion like anger is impossible to avoid especially in parenting but we can learn to handle them well.

Parents get angry and lose their patience when children display certain unacceptable behaviours.
consequently, as a result of angry outburst, they utter vulgar words which they regret later. Some parents will beat excessively with annoyance forgetting that anger shields right thinking. Meanwhile, a well thought out plan for discipline is more effective than just beating.

Hence, one if the great tools we need on this journey of parenting is to be persistently patient.we can only get better if we keep at it.

Science is curiosity.

Curiosity is one of the most important qualities of a good scientist.
The desire to understand and know more flares in their minds all the time.

Curiosity drives knowledge

Curiosity drives scientific research

Curiosity drives innovation

Children are curious by nature. They have open and active minds, they think about versions of a particular thing, they look closely, repeating an action again and again to discover a particular pattern of ideas.

They ask lots of questions and seek answers and that is science.

Children are cognitive scientists!

How does our body make and use electricity?

Just like we know, everything is made up of atoms.

Atoms are made up of proton, neutron and electron.

An atom can be positively or negatively charge.

The switch between one type of charge and other allows electron to flow from one atom to another.

This movement of electrons is called electricity.

Our body have a lot of atoms and muscle of cells so, we can generate electricity through chemical reactions of these atoms.

But how does our bodies use electricity?

The cells in our bodies are like cables.

Electrical charges build up within the cells, moving through the nervous system and sending signals to the brain.

The body use these electric signals to communicate with the brain making it possible to move, feel and respond to messages around the body.

We may not be able to power our computer or refrigerator with the electric signals we make but without them we would not be able to tell our bodies what to do.

Everything we do is enabled by electric signals that runs through our bodies.

Engaging your kids with science experiments will open up new discoveries and put their mind in the right direction of developing technology tomorrow.
Let's build future technologist!

"We don't have to teach young children how to wonder, discover and explore through play because they do it naturally" Steve Spangler.

Children love nature and science. They explore different ideas as they play.
They ask a lot of "why and how"

Hands-on science activity is one of the ways children develop ideas, observe, ask questions and make discoveries on their own.

Hands-on activity;
✔️ engages their mind

✔️ gives room for trial and error

✔️ improves their critical thinking skill

✔️ influences their interest as they
establish desire on a particular area of
learning.

There are some simple science activities that you can do at home with your kids to engage them. All you need are some of the kitchen utensils or household materials.

Some of these activities are;
✅ lava lamp
✅ Water capacity
✅ raining sponge
✅ floating ball
✅ quick sand with cornstarch
✅ bottle fountain
✅ Pencil and ziploc water bag
✅ walking water
✅ rain cloud in a jar
✅ balloon in a bottle
and many more.

Engage your children.Have fun trying out some of these activities.

🔊🔊🔊 Watch out for our WhatsApp edition of science fun day! It's going to be engaging and exciting!!

At first glance, when you look at coral reef, you will think they are plants growing on rock.

No, they are not plants. They are actually live organism.

Coral is made up of thousands of tiny animals called POLYPS.

Coral reef is a fragile underwater ecosystem.

Coral reef provide a natural habitat and protection of various species of fish.
More than 25% of all ocean animals need it to survive.

Reefs grow very slowly overtime. Infact an inch of coral reef takes nearly 100 years to grow.

Coral reefs are used in new medicines that are developed to treat cancer, arthritis, human infections and other diseases.

Unfortunately, this special ecosystem is disintegrating faster than it can be repaired due to activities like coral mining, pollution, overfishing, digging of canals and even climate change.

One of the best ways to help children explore, express, understand emotions, habits and much more is via stories.

Stories are universal, conveying meaning and purpose that help kids understand themselves and the world around them.

As we share different stories of fear, hardship, love, joy and success,we connect and communicate with other people through their story.
Stories educate and sometimes inspire children to take action as they learn about behaviour and consequence.

I stumbled on this old book from my children's library."FLY, CHICK, FLY!
The tittle didn't mean much but the content says a lot. It's a story of an Owl family and the three newly hatched chicks.

The chicks grow, day in ,day out. When it was time to fly, the first one flipped, flapped and he flew. The second chick made effort to fly,and then she flew but the last chick wouldn't even try to fly,she was afraid,
She said
"If I fly, the crow might get me" "If I fly, the rain might wet me" "If I fly, the train might hit me"
"My brother and sister flew and never came back, why would I want to fly"

Each time she says all these, her parents encourage her to fly saying
"You belong in the sky". "Your sister and brother are fine"
"Your sister is at home in the elm tree"
"Your brother is at home in the old birch tree".
"Fly, little chick, just try!" With persistent motivation from the parents, one day,she just crept to the end of the branch, she flapped, flipped and eventually flew.

She was so happy she could fly!

But what became of this last chick?

She found herself in the middle of the beech tree cuddling her first chick!

She was so glad!!! Moral of the story: Think positive,be courageous,be independent,be responsible and don't let yourself down.
And as parent,we keep encouraging our wards,we shouldn't give up, never give up!!!
