🌍 DISABILITY-INCLUSIVE CLIMATE ACTION: FROM EVIDENCE TO ACTION

On 10 September 2026, the Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) with support from Disability Rights Fund (DRF) convened a Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Disability-Inclusive Climate Action in Kano State, Nigeria.

The session brought together representatives of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), government officials, media representatives, academia, community stakeholders, and climate experts to discuss the realities of and its impact on persons with disabilities.

📊 A key component of the event was the dissemination of the Baseline Study on the Impact of Climate Change on Persons with Disabilities in Kano State, Nigeria. The findings provided important evidence on the challenges experienced by PWDs, including the impacts of extreme heat, flooding, livelihoods, , access to climate information, disaster preparedness, and other climate-related .

💬 Through interactive discussions and experience-sharing, participants identified key gaps and explored practical solutions to strengthen , inclusive climate information and early-warning systems, disaster preparedness, policy implementation, and meaningful participation of in climate decision-making.

🤝 The dialogue also strengthened collaboration among stakeholders and generated recommendations for advancing inclusive, resilient, and disability-responsive action in Kano State.

♿ BREAKING BARRIERS: OPENING EXPORT OPPORTUNITIES FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

The Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) successfully mobilized 50 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to participate in a 1-Day Enlightenment Training on “Export Inclusiveness and Opportunities”, organized by the The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC). The event was held on Tuesday, 8 September 2026 at Kano Chamber of Commerce, Trade Fair Complex, Zoo Road, Kano State Nigeria.

The training provided an important platform for PWD participants to learn about Nigeria’s non-oil export , export procedures, documentation requirements, market access, and pathways for participating in the global economy.

A key technical session on Export Procedures and Documentation was delivered providing participants with practical knowledge on the requirements and processes involved in exporting goods and .

The programme also featured interactive discussions, stakeholder engagement, goodwill messages, and certificate presentation.

On 2nd September 2026, the Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) conducted the Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with youths with disabilities in Kano State, Nigeria, under the project “Inclusive Work for Youths with Disabilities” which is co-funded by the AU-EU Youth Lab

The FGDs were organised into 2 separate groups to create a safe and inclusive space for participants to freely share their experiences:

👩‍🦽 FGD for Young Females with Disabilities

The discussions explored the lived experiences of youths with disabilities, with particular focus on:

🔹 Employment Barriers – challenges accessing decent work and employment opportunities.
🔹 Workplace Discrimination – experiences of discrimination, stigma and unequal treatment in workplaces.
🔹 Accessibility Challenges – barriers related to physical environments, transportation, communication, technology and workplaces.
🔹 Policy Gaps – gaps in policies & laws, implementation and institutional support affecting employment inclusion.

The insights gathered from these discussions will contribute to generating evidence-based recommendations and advocacy strategies aimed at promoting inclusive employment opportunities and improving the participation of youths with disabilities in the workforce.

The Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) successfully delivered a 2-Day Training Workshop for its Staff, Board Members, and Key Volunteers on Policy Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement Strategies. It was held between 29th–30th August 2026 in Kano State, Nigeria. The training is part of Technical Assistance (TA) supported by Disability Rights Fund (DRF).

The training strengthened participants’ knowledge and practical skills in policy , stakeholder mapping and engagement, strategic partnerships, evidence-based advocacy, advocacy communication, negotiation, and influence.

Through interactive sessions, group discussions, and practical exercises, participants developed valuable to strengthen DPI’s advocacy work and engagement with policymakers, government institutions, civil society , and other key stakeholders.
