Through the Cycle & Beyond Project, FutureNow Development Initiative had the privilege of engaging women at the Hajiya (Dr.) Aisha Bala Muhammad Alternative High School for Girls, Bauchi, where we facilitated sessions on menstrual health, personal development, and life skills.

It is inspiring to see many of these women now celebrated as graduates during the 1st Graduation Ceremony organised by the Bauchi State Agency for Mass Education (BASAME).

While BASAME commemorates this remarkable achievement, we are proud to have contributed to the learners' journey by equipping them with knowledge and skills that support their overall wellbeing and personal growth.

FutureNow Development Initiative Joins AfriYAN Nigeria Engagement with UNFPA Nigeria

On 26th May, our Director of Programmes, Abraham Jeremiah Ritji Kassem , represented FutureNow Development Initiative as a member organisation of the AfriYAN Nigeria Network at a strategic partnership meeting with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Nigeria Country Representative, Ms. Muriel Mafico, and the UNFPA technical team at the UN House, Abuja.

The engagement, led by AfriYAN Nigeria Network, focused on strengthening institutional alignment to advance meaningful youth participation and accountability in programming.

The discussion highlighted the importance of moving beyond tokenistic youth engagement and creating spaces where young people can meaningfully contribute to co-creating solutions.

Key areas discussed included adolescent and youth programming, strengthening youth-led responses at national and subnational levels, and advancing advocacy on sexual and reproductive health and rights.

FutureNow Development Initiative remains committed to working with partners and youth networks to amplify young people’s voices and contribute to impactful development initiatives.

A Journey of Learning, Unlearning and Reimagining Climate Action: Reflections from School of Ecology 2026

Last month in Benin City, Edo State, our Director of Programs, Mr. Abraham Jeremiah Ritji Kassem, had the privilege of participating in the School of Ecology 2026 organized by the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).

The journey from Northern Nigeria to Edo was not just a trip; it was an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the systems shaping our environmental realities and connect with other climate justice advocates.

Through powerful sessions and conversations, we explored critical themes including climate justice, extractivism, commodification of nature, environmental governance, neocolonialism, hunger politics, African environmentalism, agroecology, and sustainable alternatives.

One major lesson was that climate change is not only about the environment; it is about people, power, policies, livelihoods, and the way we define development.

The School of Ecology challenged us to ask:

🌱 If development destroys ecosystems and communities, can it truly be called development?

🌱 How do we move from seeing nature as a commodity to protecting it as the foundation of life?

🌱 How do we ensure communities most affected by climate change are not only heard but empowered to lead solutions?

The sessions on African environmentalism and agroecology strengthened our belief in local knowledge, sustainable food systems, and community-led solutions.

This experience reinforces FDI’s commitment to advancing climate action in Northern Nigeria through climate awareness, agroecology, sustainable waste management, youth leadership, and gender-inclusive solutions.

We sincerely appreciate HOMEF, Dr. Nnimmo Bassey, Dr. Mfoniso, faculty members, and all speakers for creating a transformative learning space.

The knowledge gained will continue beyond the classroom.

We look forward to our upcoming step-down training, where we will share these lessons and strengthen climate conversations within our communities.

Climate justice begins with learning, questioning, and taking action.

What Local Leaders Are Teaching Us About Climate Justice: Lessons from Communities at the Frontlines

Yesterday 25th June 2026, we had the privilege of joining Rise Up Together for a powerful conversation exploring what local leaders, grassroots organizations, and communities are teaching us about climate justice.

One key lesson stood out: climate change is not an abstract concept for communities it is a lived reality.

As Vidhu Prabha shared:

“When you talk about land, you often think of it as a commodity or asset.
But when communities talk about land, they think about their food, their children’s nutrition, their health, the soil, biodiversity, and the entire ecosystem that sustains their lives.”

This reflection reminds us that nature is not simply a resource to be extracted; it is deeply connected to identity, culture, livelihoods, and survival.

Some powerful takeaways from the conversation:

Climate action must begin with listening.
As Vidhu highlighted, we must move beyond simply responding to climate impacts and understand the systems, policies, and governance structures that shape these realities while listening to people’s experiences, language, and priorities.

Climate vulnerability is not equal.
Naomi Monda reminded us:

“Climate vulnerability does not exist in isolation and neither can climate solutions.”

Climate impacts are connected to gender inequality, livelihoods, access to resources, and participation in decision-making. Solutions must recognize these intersections.

Communities are not just victims; they are solution creators.
Stephen Idoko shared:

“Communities closest to these challenges already understand many of the solutions. We need to invest in their leadership and create more pathways for those voices to shape decisions.”

This reinforces the importance of strengthening grassroots leadership and ensuring communities are partners in shaping climate solutions.

Climate justice means shifting power.
As Naomi emphasized:

“Climate justice is not only about improving livelihoods or responding to climate impacts. It’s about shifting power, expanding participation, and ensuring that the people most affected by climate change have a meaningful voice in shaping solutions.”

At FutureNow Development Initiative, these lessons reaffirm our commitment to working with communities in Northern Nigeria on climate action, agroecology, sustainable waste management, youth leadership, and gender-inclusive solutions.

The conversation challenged us to rethink development, question systems that prioritize extraction over sustainability, and build a future where people and the planet thrive together.

Securing Menstrual Health: Our Second Pad Bank is Officially Live at kids nursery primary and secondary school Bauchi!

Period poverty isn’t just a health issue; it’s an educational barrier.

When adolescent girls lack access to sanitary products or face cultural stigma, they miss school, fall behind, and lose confidence.

To tackle this head-on for World Menstrual Hygiene Day (WMHD) 2026, the FutureNow Development Initiative (FDI) team joined forces with our incredible partner, the Youth Adolescent Health Initiative and Counselling YAHIC to duplicate our impact and deliver a sustainable, system-driven intervention at Royal Kids Academy, Bauchi State.

We broke the activity down into two high-impact phases:
1. The Practical Workshop: We engaged 30 vibrant adolescent schoolgirls in a safe space, dismantling myths, hosting focus group discussions, and conducting practical demonstrations on proper hygiene and the eco-friendly disposal of biodegradable products.

2. The Pad Bank Installation: True sustainability requires more than a one-time donation.

We officially launched and installed our second permanent, lockable Pad Bank on the school premises.
This bank is stocked with biodegradable pads and features an internal tracking notepad managed by the school's health instructors to ensure immediate, emergency access whenever a girl needs it.

The success of this activity relies heavily on the beautiful energy of the students, teachers, and our joint team standing in absolute solidarity for a .
