Common Myths About Grants (That Are Holding You Back!)

There are some wrong ideologies or conceptions concerning grants that are hindering you from winning grants.

In today's video, I am going to uncover some of them.

Number 1: Grants Are Free Money

This is probably the biggest. Yes, grants don't need to be repaid.

But they're not "free money." Funders expect results, impact, accountability, reports, and proper use of funds.

In other words, grants come with responsibility.

Watch this video for more insights.

Being passionate about your business isnโ€™t enough to win a grant.

Recently, a client shared her frustration with me about repeatedly applying for grants without getting selected.

She runs a packaged foodstuff and supply business, and from our conversation, one thing was obvious:

She is genuinely passionate about her business. She knows her customers.
She understands her products. She wants to grow. She works hard.

But passion alone doesn't automatically make an application fundable.

When most funders review applications, they look beyond passion. They also want to understand:
๐Ÿ‘‰ What specific problem are you solving?
๐Ÿ‘‰ Who benefits from your solution?
๐Ÿ‘‰ What evidence shows that your business is working?
๐Ÿ‘‰ Why is your proposed project or solution aligned with this particular grant?

You can be extremely passionate about your business and still submit an application that doesn't communicate this value effectively.

So before applying for your next grant, make sure your application is well positioned with these values.

Have you ever encountered a complicated grant question when applying for grants?๐Ÿ˜€

A complicated grant question can make you stare at your screen for 30 minutes.

But here's a secret:

You don't always need a complicated answer. You need to understand what the question is really asking.

One practical technique I use is to break the question into smaller questions.

For example, imagine a grant program asks:

โ€œDescribe the problem your business addresses, the population affected, the evidence demonstrating the scale of the problem, and how your proposed solution will create measurable impact.โ€

This looks complicated, right? But what i do is not to answer everything at once.

Break it down:

๐Ÿ‘‰ What is the problem? What specific challenge are you addressing?

๐Ÿ‘‰ Who is affected? Who experiences this problem?

๐Ÿ‘‰ How big is the problem? What evidence, data, customer feedback or experience demonstrates it?

๐Ÿ‘‰ What is your solution? What exactly are you doing to address the problem?

๐Ÿ‘‰ What impact will it create? What measurable change do you expect?

Now you have five simple questions instead of one complicated question.

Let me answer this question with this example:

You could structure your response this way:

Problem: According to FAO, smallholder farmers in Nigeria struggle to access reliable markets for their produce.

Who is affected: Smallholder farmers in Nigeria.

Evidence: Farmers frequently sell at low prices because they lack access to organized buyers and market information.

Solution: We aggregate their produce and connect them with reliable buyers.

Impact: The project will help participating farmers reduce unsold produce and improve their market access and income.

This answer may not be perfect but that is the power of breaking down a complicated grant question.

Don't let a long question intimidate you.

Find the smaller questions hiding inside it and answer them one by one.
