Scientists have successfully used lab-grown insulin-producing cells to help a person with type 1 diabetes—without needing any immune-suppressing drugs. That’s huge, because it means the body didn’t reject the new cells, which were edited using CRISPR to avoid detection by the immune system.

The 42-year-old patient had been living with diabetes for nearly 40 years. After getting the transplanted cells into his arm muscle, his body began producing insulin naturally again—for at least 12 weeks. Even better? He didn’t need any insulin injections or extra meds to stop his immune system from attacking the new cells.

This is the first time this type of transplant has worked in a human without rejection, and it could open the door to a future where type 1 diabetes is treated without daily shots or pills. It’s still early, but if it works long-term, this might be the beginning of a real cure.
