NNEWI IT YOUR TURN FOR URBAN DEVELOPMENT - Gov. Soludo

Today, I spent productive hours in Nnewi with my team, walking the city and planning its future.

We started at the Nnewi roundabout — the mall project abandoned for almost 17 years. We toured the entire space. That ends now. We will convert it into something viable and of real public value within the life of this administration.

We moved to the Post Office, Eme Court Road, and the expanse of land between Umudim and Ukpor. I stood at the roundabout and saw it clearly: Nnewi has grown. We must now bring life into it.

Nnewi needs an open arena for leisure and relaxation. If you don’t have that, you are not a city. We intend to build a central motor park, green spaces, and a multipurpose outdoor arena right here. Nnewi deserves it.

Urban renewal is tough work. It involves demolition. But we are intentional. We did it in Ekwulobia — over 500 houses, 14 petrol stations, even a shrine. We did it for the Anambra of the next generation.

What we are doing now should have happened 60 years ago. In the next 10 years, we expect about 35 million people here. We must plan. We must regenerate. We must rescue our cities.

Nnewi, we have turned our gaze on you. We will give this city the facelift it deserves.

May Anambra continue to win!

NNEWI WILL RECLAIM ITS RIGHTFUL PLACE AS PREMIER INDUSTRIAL NERVE CENTER', SAYS SOLUDO

By Christian ABURIME

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has signaled a strategic shift in his administration’s urban renewal agenda, launching an aggressive inspection tour of Nnewi aimed at reclaiming dormant public assets and injecting new life into the state’s industrial heartbeat.

The tour, which spanned several critical sectors of the city, served as a diagnostic mission to identify infrastructure bottlenecks that have long stifled Nnewi’s commercial potential. By targeting neglected sites and underutilized land, the Governor intends to transform the city into a modern, high-functioning urban center.

The most prominent stop on the Governor's itinerary was the Nkwo Nnewi Triangle, home to a shopping complex that has remained a shell of unfulfilled promise for 17 years. Standing before the structure, Governor Soludo expressed frustration at the protracted stagnation.

"It is unacceptable that public assets intended to drive commerce have been left to rot for nearly two decades," Governor Soludo remarked. "We are here to draw a line in the sand. This facility will no longer be a monument to neglect; we are moving swiftly to restore it to productive use to serve the people of Nnewi."

Beyond the shopping mall, the Governor inspected the Post Office vicinity and high court premises. His vision involves integrating these legacy sites into a cohesive, contemporary urban plan that enhances accessibility and elevates the standards of public service.

Furthermore, the Governor scouted locations for strategic housing developments. Officials noted that providing high-quality residential infrastructure is essential to sustaining Nnewi’s expanding workforce and maintaining its competitive edge as a commercial hub.

Governor Soludo articulated a broader vision for the city, emphasizing that his administration is aggressively mapping out underutilized open spaces. The goal is to repurpose it for public parks, recreational areas, and new commercial ventures.

"Our strategy is simple: we are unlocking the hidden value of Nnewi," the Governor explained during a brief interaction with local stakeholders. "By converting dormant open spaces into vibrant public parks and productive facilities, we are not just fixing buildings—we are stimulating local commerce and reclaiming Nnewi’s rightful place as the premier industrial nerve center of the region."

The inspection concluded with the Governor signaling that tangible construction and redevelopment efforts are slated to begin in the coming weeks.

The Commissioner for Works, Arch. Okey Ezeobi, Commissioner for Housing, Architect Henry Arinze, Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, Mayors of Nnewi South, Nnewi North and Ekwusigo, among others, accompanied the Governor to the visit.

A High Court in Anambra State has handed down the maximum sentence to commercial Keke driver Makua Ezike over his role in the 2019 incident that led to the p@ssing of Jude Onwuegbuchunam.

Justice Lauretta Oyeka delivered the judgment after finding Ezike guilty of culpable h0mic!de related to an alleged r0bbery operation along the Oba-Obosi-Nkpor-Umuoji Road on November 17, 2019.

Court records show Ezike and two accomplices, still at large, reportedly posed as a keke rider and passengers. They picked up Onwuegbuchunam, an indigene of Umuoji in Idemili North LGA, and allegedly attempted to seize his phone and valuables during the ride. When the victim resisted and called for help, he was thrown from the moving keke near Abidi Hall, Umuoji, where local vigilante operatives were stationed.

The vigilante team pursued the fleeing suspects. Ezike abandoned the keke and escaped with the others. Onwuegbuchunam sustained severe injuries and p@ssed away two days later.

During trial, the prosecution presented five witnesses, including the medical professional who conducted the autopsy. The doctor testified that the injuries from the fall directly caused Onwuegbuchunam’s p@ssing.

The defence argued there was no direct eyewitness. Justice Oyeka, however, ruled that conviction can rest on eyewitness testimony, confession, or strong circumstantial evidence. In this case, she said the circumstantial evidence was compelling: the abandoned tricycle, Ezike’s flight from the scene, his admission to investigators, and the medical report linking the injuries to the inc!dent.

Ezike was subsequently conv!cted and sent€nced to de@th.
