The Karoo system. Is an important set of rock strata well known to palaeontologists interested in extinction events! The geologic units extend over a 1,560,000-sq-km (~600,000-sq-mi) area of Africa from the Equator south to the Cape of Good Hope. This map shows the most prominent outcrop.
The time span of the Karoo System extends from the Carboniferous and Permian periods (~359 million to 252 million years ago) to the Late Triassic Epoch (about 237 million to 200 million years ago). At its thickest, the Karoo consists of more than 10,500 m (35,000 ft) of terrestrial rocks from the time of Gondwana supercontinent. The presence of coal seams, along with some petroleum, makes these rocks somewhat commercially important. But our scientific interest here is the almost singular glimpse that the Karoo affords for understanding reptilian life, especially the mammal-like therapsid reptiles. These ancient animals are among the progenitors of the true mammals!
Stay tuned today as we present more Karoo.
