HSAN Online Safety for Teens — Discord, Social Media & Scams
Does the thought of your teen navigating Discord, TikTok, or online games fill you with a mix of curiosity and concern? It is completely normal to feel a bit overwhelmed by the ever-evolving digital landscape our children inhabit, especially when we are balancing busy schedules and educational responsibilities.
Why This Matters
For alternative and homeschool families in Namibia, our teens often enjoy more flexibility in their daily schedules, which naturally translates to more time online. While this offers incredible learning and social opportunities, it also means we need to be extra vigilant about digital challenges and scams, ensuring their safety and well-being as they connect with the world.
What You Can Try This Week
Set screen time boundaries: Establish clear, family-agreed-upon limits for all devices, including "no phone zones" like mealtimes or bedrooms after a certain hour.
Discuss digital footprints: Talk about how everything posted online leaves a permanent trace, regardless of privacy settings.
Spot online scams: Have open conversations about common scams targeting teens, such as 'free' offers, fake opportunities, or requests for personal information that sound too good to be true.
Review privacy settings: Sit down together to adjust settings on their most-used apps and platforms so they understand who can see their content and why it matters.
Keep an open-door policy: Assure your teens they can come to you without judgment if they encounter something uncomfortable or suspicious online.
Encourage offline balance: Help them discover and engage in real-world hobbies and activities to maintain a healthy balance.
What to Watch Out For
The "one-and-done" talk: Online safety is an ongoing conversation, not a single lecture, as digital trends evolve rapidly.
Dismissing their platforms: Avoid assuming platforms like Discord or specific games are harmless without understanding their social dynamics and potential risks.
Over-monitoring vs. trust: While vigilance is key, constant surveillance can erode trust; aim for open communication and education over strict control.
Navigating the digital world with your teen is a journey, not a destination. By fostering an environment of trust, open dialogue, and practical guidance, we are not just protecting them—we are empowering them to become responsible, discerning digital citizens.
You've got this!
