In October 1988, Obert Mpofu a Bulawayo-based businessman accidentally received a cheque from a car company in Willowvale. Mpofu took the cheque to Geoffrey Nyarota and Davison Maruziva who, at that time, worked as editors for the state-owned Bulawayo Chronicle. The two began to investigate and what followed was the uncovering of a scandal that shook Zimbabwean politics at its core and implicated high profile names such as Enos Nkala, Maurice Nyagumbo, Solomon Mujuru, Sam Levy just to name a few. The Willowgate scandal is an important bookmark in Zimbabwean history and is sighted by many as the scandal that sowed the seeds of impunity among public officials.
