A die crack occurs when a heavy steel manufacturing die develops a physical fracture under intense pressure. When a blank coin planchet is struck by the cracked die, metal flows upward into the fissure, creating a raised, jagged line of metal on the final coin.

Key Observations

Location: The raised line branches out from the main design element (the wau kite sail) and extends all the way to the outer rim of the coin.

Classification: Because the crack extends fully out to the edge, collectors often categorize this specific type as a rim-to-rim die crack or a major die break.

Value: Minor die cracks are relatively common, but distinct cracks that travel to the rim are popular among numismatic error collectors and can add modest premiums depending on condition.

Error Characteristics

The Line: The prominent horizontal raised line running across the middle section of the coin (passing directly through the center of the number "1" and separating the digits "20" and "07") is a die crack.

The Cause: This occurs during the minting process when the heavy steel die used to stamp the blank metal planchets begins to fracture or crack under intense heat and pressure.

The Mechanism: When the cracked die presses into a blank coin, the soft metal flows upward into the crevice of the fracture, leaving a raised, vein-like line on the finished coin's surface.

Error Identification
Visual Evidence: You can clearly see a raised, irregular horizontal line of extra metal running completely across the center of the coin.

It starts from the left rim near the letter "A" in BANK It cuts directly across the design to the final "A" in MALAYSIA.

This prominent, rim-to-rim line is a classic example of a major die crack (often called a pre-cud die crack). Because the fracture splits the die completely from one edge to the other, it indicates the minting tool was very close to breaking apart completely.

🔍 EDUCATION POST: 1990 50 SEN DIE CRACK ERROR

Today I want to share about this 1990 50 SEN coin from my collection - MyErrorCoin.

Many people think error coins are damaged coins. Actually, this is NOT damage. This is a DIE CRACK ERROR.

What you see:
On the reverse side, there is a clear raised line running from inside the number 0 in 50, straight down to the letter N in SEN.
👉 I marked it with a red circle and yellow circle in the photos.

What is Die Crack?
During minting, the steel die that strikes the coins can develop a small crack from pressure and age. When that cracked die strikes a blank coin, the metal fills into the crack, leaving a raised line on the coin. This is 100% from the mint, not man-made.

Why this close-up of MALAYSIA 90 matters?
I included a super close-up of MALAYSIA and 90 to show:
1. The lettering is sharp and original 2. The surface has natural mint flow lines 3. No polishing, no cleaning, no editing on the error This proves the coin is 100% genuine.

This coin features a distinct ragged rim clip (or blanking clip) error.

Error Breakdown

The Defect: Look closely at the upper left edge along the letter "M" in "MALAYSIA." A portion of the curved edge and rim is jaggedly broken away, which cuts slightly into the border design.

How It Happens: This occurs during the production stage at the mint when the circular metal blanks (planchets) are punched out from large metal strips. If the strip of metal doesn't advance properly, the punch partially hits an area that has already been cut or a defective edge on the strip, resulting in an incomplete or "clipped" blank.

Because the 1969 20 sen is already considered a key date with a relatively low mintage for Malaysia's first coin series, having a verified mint error makes it a highly desirable piece for numismatic collectors.
