A Short Story:
Roshan had learned to read honey the way some men read land.

Not by color alone, though color told you plenty. This batch ran deep amber, almost burgundy at the center where the comb sat thickest. Multifloral, which meant the bees had been ranging wide across the valley floor, pulling from whatever was blooming that week. The flavor would be complex, a little unpredictable. That was what made it honest.

He pressed the uncapping knife along the top of the frame slowly. No wasted motion. That was simply how Roshan did things, in the hive, in the fields, in the way he rose before the village did and returned after it had eaten. Quiet men like him didn’t talk about discipline. They just showed up, year after year, until the work itself became a kind of character.

Behind him, somewhere near the shed, his son was watching. Roshan could feel it without turning around. The boy was twelve now, old enough to help, still young enough to think beekeeping was mostly about getting stung. He would learn.
He tilted the frame toward the light.

A man had contacted him last month. Said there were people abroad, in Malaysia of all places, who wanted to sell his honey. Raw. Unadulterated. With a story attached.

Roshan wasn’t sure what his story was worth. He only knew what the honey was worth. And he knew that most people who talked about purity had never held a frame like this, the wax giving slightly under the knife, the smell rising warm and alive and impossibly layered.

He set the frame into the extractor and finally turned around.
His son was still there, arms folded, pretending he hadn’t been staring.

“Come,” Roshan said simply.

The boy walked over. Roshan placed the next frame in his hands without explanation. The weight of it, the warmth, the smell. Let it speak first.
