Bormal Engineering is proud to have commenced works on the 𝗚𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝟯𝟯𝗸𝗩 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, together with the associated power distribution connection from the Serian 33kV Substation — strengthening the electrical infrastructure that will help support the continued growth of Gedong and its surrounding areas.

Gedong itself is entering an exciting period of transformation. The planned Gedong Isthmus has been envisioned as a new strategic growth hub, alongside wider improvements in connectivity and future developments spanning commercial, educational, community and economic activities.

We may be building the substation and cable connections today, but the infrastructure we deliver will support opportunities and communities for many years to come.

When people hear Value Engineering (VE), they often assume it simply means reducing project costs.

💡 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄?
The objective of Value Engineering isn't to find the cheapest solution—it's to achieve the best value throughout the life of a project.

In construction, Value Engineering is a structured process of evaluating different design, material, construction and procurement options to improve project performance while maintaining the required levels of 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆, 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

Effective Value Engineering can help:

(1) Improve constructability and simplify installation
(2) Reduce lifecycle operation and maintenance costs
(3) Optimise material and resource utilisation
(4) Minimize project risks and unnecessary rework
(5) Deliver better long-term value for project owners

The greatest opportunities for Value Engineering arise during the 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀, where changes can be evaluated before construction begins. Once construction is underway, design changes become progressively more expensive and disruptive to implement.

When applied effectively, it creates solutions that benefit not only the contractor, but also our clients, end users and the communities the infrastructure serves.

Because successful engineering isn't measured by 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱—it's measured by 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲.

In infrastructure and construction projects, selecting the right delivery model can significantly influence risk allocation, project speed, cost certainty and overall accountability.

Two common approaches are 𝗣𝗠𝗖 (Project Management Consultancy) and 𝗘𝗣𝗖 (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) — and while both aim to deliver successful projects, they fundamentally operate very differently.

Under the 𝗣𝗠𝗖 model, the client retains greater control and flexibility, while the PMC acts as the client's representative to coordinate designers, contractors, procurement and project ex*****on.

Under an 𝗘𝗣𝗖 model, the contractor assumes a larger role — taking responsibility for design, procurement, construction and often commissioning under a single contract.

Neither model is universally better. The right choice depends on factors such as project complexity, timeline expectation, budget certainty and client's preferred level of involvement. Nevertheless, in the end, successful projects are not defined by the model chosen — but by how well that model aligns with the project goals.

Commissioned earlier this week, this substation plays a critical role in supporting the upcoming 𝗜𝗛𝗛 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹, ensuring reliable power for healthcare services that will serve many in the years ahead.

Substation may not always be visible to the public — but their impact is everywhere. They energize businesses, support hospitals and enable communities and create the foundation for future growth.

In construction projects, progress is not only measured on site, it is reflected through structured payment processes.

The 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺 𝗣𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗜𝗣𝗖) plays a critical role in ensuring that contractors are paid fairly for work completed, while maintaining transparency and accountability between all parties.

A typical process involves:

- Contractor submitting a progress claim based on work completed
- Consultants/Clients reviewing and issuing the Interim Payment Certificate (IPC)
- Contractor then raising an invoice based on the certified amount.

This process ensures that payments are aligned with the actual progress, reduces disputes and maintains healthy project cash flow — which is essential for sustaining ongoing works.

Understanding the IPC process is key — not just for contractors, but for all stakeholders involved in project delivery.

𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 (𝗣𝗩𝗗) 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? Without ground improvement, soft clay can take years to fully settle — but PVD can reduce this to months.

At our Tg. Bako 275/33/11kV Substation Project, ground improvement works are currently underway using 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 (𝗣𝗩𝗗) — a critical method for accelerating consolidation in soft soils.

In areas with compressible clay, natural settlement can take years. PVD works by providing a shortened drainage path for pore water within the soil, allowing excess water pressure to dissipate more quickly under surcharge loading. This significantly reduces consolidation time and improves the ground's bearing capacity for future structures.

The process involves installing vertical drains into the ground using specialized mandrel rigs, followed by surcharge filling to induce settlement. As the water is expelled through the drains, the soil gradually consolidates and gains strength — ensuring long-term stability of the foundation.

Careful planning of drain spacing, depth and surcharge levels is essential to achieving the required performance while managing settlement limits and timelines.

Ground improvement is often unseen once completed, but it forms the foundation of everything that follows — quite literally.

Away from the drawings, site works, and deadlines, nights like these allow us to reconnect beyond our roles and strengthen the bonds that carry us through both the demanding and rewarding parts of what we do.
