Vincent de Paul is an international lay organisation Catholic in character where all are welcomed, who through personal contact seek to relieve those in need without regard to wealth, position, social status or ethnic origin. In promoting human dignity and integrity, the Society works to redress situations which adversely affect peoples’ lives and their basic rights. The Society was founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam who was then a student of Sorbonne University in Paris. He was challenged to put his Christian beliefs into action. He took up this challenge and together with some close friends, set about helping the poor and oppressed in Paris. He firmly believed that in order to help the less fortunate, one must be prepared to visit them in their homes and see for oneself the conditions of life they are subjected to and then go about helping them. Frederic Ozanam named the Society after St. Vincent de Paul the poor man’s Saint and the patron saint for Christian charities. Vincent, who lived between 1581 to 1660, devoted his life to helping the poor, the down trodden and the under-privileged. Vincent de Paul is established across the five continents in 133 countries, with a membership of 900,000.The St Vincent de Paul Society aims to help men, women and families to break their cycle of poverty and disadvantage. Vincent de Paul in Malaysia began in 1934 with the first Conference formed in the then Church of the Assumption, Penang. In the early fifties, the Society began to mushroom along the western half of the Peninsular and in the eighties it was established in Sarawak. To-date we have 62 conferences with a membership of 900.

🧧 Lions Club CNY Ang Pow & Gift Presentation 🧧
SSVP – Conference of St. Joseph, Kuching, 7 February 2026

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Conference of St. Joseph, Kuching, was honoured to collaborate with the Lions Club in a meaningful Chinese New Year Ang Pow and gift presentation for 10 deserving families.

Held at St. Mary Room, ACCPC Building, the event brought together recipient families, SSVP members, and volunteers in a warm and joyful atmosphere. Through the generosity of the Lions Club, Ang Pows and festive gifts were presented to bring encouragement, hope, and cheer as families prepare to welcome the Lunar New Year.

A total of 33 participants were present, and the morning was filled with smiles, gratitude, and a strong sense of community. Light refreshments were served, and SSVP members worked together to ensure the programme ran smoothly.

Heartfelt thanks to the Lions Club for their generosity and partnership, and appreciation to all SSVP members who made this event possible. May this simple act of kindness continue to spread compassion and joy to those we serve.

Thank you, Brothers & Sisters in Christ for your encouraging support of and continued interest in SSVP SJC’s pre-sales these past three Sunday mornings outside St. Joseph’s Cathedral, which was held to kick start fund-raising for Home of Peace Open Day.

On the actual open day this coming Saturday, 11th October 2025, SSVP SJC will join many others at HoP premises (Jalan Landeh) and operate a stall there (No. 34) to conclude this fund-raising effort.

Please do come and spend your morning with all of us. There will be lots of good food and fun activities, and you will get to know HoP better, and bring welcome cheer to her residents. 😁
