Wildlife Photography in Bako National Park 📸 Some snippets of my photography adventure in Bako National Park! Two of the highlights were the Proboscis and Silvered Leaf Monkeys. I had an amazing wildlife experience, and this was all just a 90 mins flight from home. I would recommend a guide as they are well versed in locating the wildlife. As dusk falls over Bako National Park, the rainforest stirs with life. Nocturnal creatures emerge proboscis monkeys retreat, while Sunda colugos glide between trees. The Bornean keeled pit viper, a master of ambush, coils silently, waiting for prey.

' OFF HE GOES '

The eagle ascends once more, the golden light catches the curve of its beak, the breadth of its wings. It is not merely a predator but a symphony in motion, dancing on the edge of the wilderness and the rising sun.

The scaly-breasted munia, a small and enchanting bird, exemplifies the art of resourcefulness in nature. These tiny birds meticulously gather small branches, dry grass, and other plant fibers to weave intricate and rounded nests, often hidden within dense foliage or grasslands. This careful placement provides them with not just shelter, but also excellent camouflage, blending seamlessly into their environment to evade predators. Their nests, though fragile in appearance, are marvels of engineering, reflecting the munia's instinct for survival and the harmony of life shaped by adaptation.

The juvenile snake emerges into a world indifferent to its fragile existence, a sliver of life shimmering beneath the vast canopy of the rainforest. Its scales glisten like drops of rain clinging to blades of grass, a delicate armor against the unkind realities of survival.

' POETRY OF THE WILD '

As the snake retreats into the dappled shade, its hunger sated, life begins anew. The frog’s story does not end but transforms, its essence becoming part of the snake, carried forward through the endless cycle of birth, growth, and renewal. Beneath the veiled branches of the rainforest, every death is a seed for new beginnings.

As he grows, the baby macaque must master climbing, leaping, and foraging while evading threats, honing skills through observation and mimicry of older troop members. Mistakes are inevitable, and scars—both physical and emotional—become part of his story.

Their aerial acrobatics while catching insects mid-flight are such a treat to watch.

' BARBET '

While I couldn't find a definitive list of all Barbet species in Bako, the park is known for its rich bird diversity, with about 150 species recorded. Among the Barbets, the RED CROWNED BARBET and BORNEO BROWN BARBET are commonly mentioned.

Seed-eater, often spotted foraging on grass seeds, and it plays an essential role in balancing ecosystems by dispersing seeds. The Scaly-breasted Munia is also known for its delightful, soft chirps and tendency to travel in flocks. A common sight across much of Southeast Asia, including your region in Sarawak.

Bako National Park is a haven for creatures that defy gravity. The Draco lizard, with its rib-extended wings, glides effortlessly between trees. Some snakes, like the Paradise tree snake, flatten their bodies to glide through the air, almost like flying.
