As their name suggests, woodpeckers are known for pecking trees to forage for insects - but they also use this drilling motion, which creates a drumming sound, to communicate. Woodpeckers have specially evolved to perform these tasks without damaging their brain. They have a padded skull and a hyoid bone which acts as a safety belt that wraps around their skull, and attaches between their eyes protecting their brain from the continuous impact. This is a female banded woodpecker, native to tropical southeastern Asia.

Binturongs, often called bearcats, are neither bears nor cats but members of the civet family. Growing up to 60–90 cm in length, they’re covered in thick black fur and built for life in the trees. With five toes and strong claws, they move effortlessly through the canopy, guided by a fully prehensile tail that works like a fifth limb. Native to the dense tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, binturongs are quiet, elusive, and rarely seen.

The Sabah partridge is only found in the state of Sabah in tropical lowland forest below 500m, much lower than other partridges in their range. They have intricately patterned feathers with brown buff scaling, and a stippled black-and-white head pattern. They were once thought to be the same species as the chestnut-necklaced partridge but are easily distinguished by the lack of rufous on their head as well as the buff scaling on their belly. The Sabah partridge forage in small flocks on the forest floor. ⁠

While ruddy kingfishers are found as far north as Japan and South Korea, they are migratory and can also be found as far south as Borneo. They are challenging to spot despite their striking colouring. Ruddy kingfishers prefer heavily forested areas and tend to stay hidden within dense vegetation. They are skilled at blending into their surroundings and are more often heard than seen with their high descending call.

Native to Sumatra and Borneo, Orangutans are incredible primates known for their intelligence and gentle nature. Orangutan babies and their mothers share a very special bond. Mothers provide constant care and protection to their offspring - teaching them everything they need to know about survival in the wild. The bond between mother and baby is incredibly strong and they spend several years together, some staying with their mother until 7 or 8 years old.

Malaysian blue flycatchers are a brilliant blue with a pale orange throat and chest, and white belly. Females are a lighter shade of blue with a white throat. They are small flycatchers that are found in riverine forests in Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula - but are sometimes found in wet and dry forests throughout Borneo. ⁠

Prevost’s squirrel, also known as the Asian tri-coloured squirrel, is one of Southeast Asia’s most eye-catching mammals. Typically black above, chestnut below, with a pale stripe in between, though colours vary across subspecies. Arboreal and agile, they live alone or in small groups, inhabiting forests but often venturing into plantations and gardens.
