Fort Cornwallis is one chapter in the North Seafront Programme's ongoing story of revitalising George Town's historic civic heart. On 26 July, A Day at the Fort welcomed families, students and heritage enthusiasts to explore the site through guided tours with Think City's project team, heritage workshops and hands-on activities.

From the reinstated moat and restored vaulted storerooms to the new interpretation galleries, visitors experienced how conservation can transform a historic site into a living place for learning, discovery and shared experiences.

Seeing the Fort filled with people once again was a meaningful milestone, demonstrating that heritage is at its most valuable when it brings communities together, inspires curiosity, deepens our understanding of the many stories that have shaped Penang, and empowers its people to shape its future together.

For more than a decade, the North Seafront Programme has been reconnecting George Town with its waterfront while revitalising the city's historic civic heart through heritage conservation, public realm improvement, and efforts to strengthen climate resilience.

From the Esplanade Seawall & Promenade, Koh Seang Tat Fountain Garden, improvements along the pedestrian route on Light Street, Linear Garden and Astaka Kota Selera, to the conservation of Fort Cornwallis, each initiative contributes to reconnecting Padang Kota Lama, Fort Cornwallis, Town Hall, City Hall, Dewan Sri Penang, and the waterfront as a single civic landscape.

The programme demonstrates that heritage and progress can go hand in hand. It connects us to our shared history, strengthens our sense of identity, and reminds us that our greatest strength lies in unity, reflecting the spirit of Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu (Unity is Strength).

The programme is led by the George Town Conservation and Development Corporation - GTCDC, a collaboration between Penang's Chief Minister Incorporated and Think City, together with the City Council of Penang Island (MBPP), the Aga Khan Trust for Culture as Technical Advisor, and Yayasan Hasanah as Strategic Partner.

Fort Cornwallis kini kembali membuka pintunya kepada orang ramai selepas usaha pemuliharaan selama sedekad menerusi Program Pesisir Laut Utara (North Seafront Programme) George Town, Pulau Pinang.
