If you have melanin-rich skin, the goal isn’t to use more actives. It’s to protect your skin barrier and avoid unnecessary irritation—because inflammation can contribute to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

Save this ingredient cheat sheet 👇🏽

For dark spots + uneven tone:
• Niacinamide — supports the skin barrier and helps improve the appearance of uneven tone
• Azelaic acid — commonly used for discoloration and blemish-prone skin
• Tranexamic acid — often used in routines targeting stubborn hyperpigmentation
• Alpha arbutin — helps improve the appearance of excess pigmentation
• Vitamin C / L-ascorbic acid — antioxidant support + helps brighten the appearance of skin

For protecting your progress:
• Broad-spectrum SPF 30–50+ — daily sunscreen matters when pigmentation is a concern
• Iron oxides — worth looking for in tinted sunscreen, especially when visible-light exposure is a concern.

🚩 The mistake?

Thinking that adding more brightening products will make pigmentation disappear faster.

Sometimes, more products = more irritation.

A better approach:

One active at a time → moisturize → SPF daily → stay consistent.

And if you’re also interested in supporting your skin from the inside out, this is where I personally like to add an antioxidant-focused supplement alongside a consistent skincare routine.

Think of it as support, not a replacement for your skincare or sunscreen. ✨

Save these names:
Niacinamide • Azelaic Acid • Tranexamic Acid • Alpha Arbutin • L-Ascorbic Acid • Iron Oxides • Broad-Spectrum SPF

The word you’ll want to remember: TYROSINASE. 🧠✨

If you’re wondering why your skin keeps producing more pigment even when you’re diligent with skincare, this is one piece of the puzzle.

Tyrosinase is a key enzyme involved in melanin production. When melanogenesis is switched on, this enzyme helps drive the process of making more melanin.

And one of the things worth paying attention to? Oxidative stress.

Think of your skin like this:

☀️ UV exposure + environmental stress
↓
🔥 skin stress + oxidative processes
↓
🧬 signals involved in melanogenesis
↓
🤎 increased melanin production

So if you’re working on a more even-looking, radiant complexion, don’t just think about what you put on your skin. Think about how you’re supporting it from within, too.

SAVE THIS:
The word = TYROSINASE
Ingredients worth remembering = Polypodium leucotomos + Glutathione
The bigger picture = UV protection + antioxidant support + consistent skincare

And share this with someone who keeps asking, “Why does my pigmentation keep coming back?” 🤎

What nobody tells you about melanin 🤎
— SAVE THIS INGREDIENT CHEAT SHEET —

If you have melanin-rich skin, you don’t need to memorize 20 skincare products.

You need to recognize a few ingredient names and know what they’re actually for:

🤎 Niacinamide
Helps support the skin barrier and can help improve the appearance of uneven tone.

🤎 Tranexamic Acid
A pigmentation-focused ingredient that can help with the appearance of stubborn dark spots and uneven skin tone.

🤎 Azelaic Acid
A multitasker for uneven tone and blemish-prone skin — especially useful when breakouts and dark marks seem to come as a package deal.

🤎 Alpha Arbutin
Helps reduce the appearance of excess pigmentation by influencing melanin production.

🤎 Kojic Acid
A pigment-targeting ingredient derived from certain fungi. It can help brighten the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

🤎 Vitamin C / Ascorbic Acid
An antioxidant that helps protect skin from oxidative stress and can support a more even-looking complexion.

🤎 Licorice Root / Glabridin
A botanical ingredient used in formulas targeting uneven pigmentation.

🤎 N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG)
This is the one nobody remembers. 😂
It can support a more even-looking skin tone and is sometimes paired with niacinamide in pigmentation-focused formulas.

🤎 Thiamidol
Another name worth saving. It targets the appearance of hyperpigmentation by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production.

🤎 Retinoids
Ingredients such as retinol can increase skin cell turnover and may help improve the appearance of uneven pigmentation over time.

BUT HERE’S THE PART PEOPLE FORGET:

More ingredients ≠ better results.

If your skin is constantly irritated, inflammation itself can contribute to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

And no matter how good your brightening routine is:

☀️ SUN PROTECTION MATTERS.

Melanin-rich skin still experiences UV exposure and can develop hyperpigmentation and sun damage.

So don’t just save the product.

Save the ingredient names.
Your future skincare shopping trip will thank you. 🤎

The hidden connection between inflammation & melanin 👀

Ever noticed a dark mark showing up after a pimple, irritation, or skin injury?

Here’s what’s happening:

Inflammation → signals melanocytes → more melanin → pigmentation.

That’s why sometimes the breakout is gone… but the mark stays for weeks or months.

If you’re prone to pigmentation, your goal isn’t just to “brighten” the skin.

You also want to keep inflammation under control.

🧴 SAVE THIS INGREDIENT CHEAT SHEET

For calming inflammation:
• Centella asiatica
• Panthenol
• Allantoin
• Colloidal oatmeal
• Green tea

For helping manage pigmentation:
• Niacinamide
• Azelaic acid
• Tranexamic acid
• Vitamin C
• Alpha arbutin

And the non-negotiable:
☀️ Broad-spectrum sunscreen every day.

Because UV exposure can stimulate pigmentation and make existing dark marks harder to fade.

🚨 One more thing:

More actives ≠ better results.

Over-exfoliating or constantly irritating your skin can create more inflammation, which may work against your pigmentation goals.

Think:

CALM → PROTECT → TREAT

Save this ingredient list for the next time you’re choosing a skincare product, and send it to someone who’s always fighting dark spots.

Melanin is NOT the enemy.

In fact, melanin is your skin’s natural pigment and plays an important role in protecting your skin from UV radiation.

So why do dark spots happen?

When your skin experiences UV exposure, inflammation, acne, irritation, or injury, it can trigger melanocytes to produce more melanin. That extra pigment can show up as post-acne marks, sun spots, or uneven pigmentation.

And here’s what many people get wrong:

✨ Dark spots aren’t just about “having more melanin.”
They’re often about how your skin responds to inflammation and environmental stress.

4 things that can help support more even-looking skin:

1. Protect your skin from UV ☀️
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is one of the most important steps because UV exposure can stimulate melanin production.

2. Don’t underestimate inflammation
Picking pimples, over-exfoliating, or constantly irritating your skin can make pigmentation more noticeable—especially in melanin-rich skin.

3. Support your skin from within
Your skin is constantly dealing with oxidative stress from everyday environmental exposure. A diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables provides antioxidants that support overall skin health.

4. Be consistent, not aggressive
Trying to “burn off” pigmentation with harsh products can backfire. Healthy-looking skin responds better to a gentle, consistent routine.

📌 SAVE this for the next time you’re tempted to attack a dark spot with everything you have.

And SHARE this with someone who thinks melanin is the problem. 🤎

If you’re looking for an extra layer of antioxidant support for your skin from within, I also have a high-antioxidant skin supplement that can complement your skincare routine.
