Thank you to Ian Maycumber and Tyler King, U.S. Department of the Interior specialists, for leading an excellent training on remote sensing and geospatial planning through the Ambassador's Water Experts Program. They gave Lesotho's water experts practical tools to prepare for the projected El Niño.

Thank you also to the 30 participants from the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority, the Water and Sewerage Company, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Water Resources, and the National University of Lesotho for their engagement, local knowledge, and commitment to protecting Lesotho's water.

When we invest in skilled people and sound water management, we protect livelihoods, support industry, and help communities withstand drought. The United States and Lesotho are building economic growth, energy generation, and disaster preparedness together.

On behalf of the United States of America, I extend my congratulations to His Majesty King Letsie III and the people of Lesotho as you commemorate 60 years of independence.

This milestone anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate the enduring partnership between our two nations. Happy 60th Independence Day, Lesotho!

The U.S. Embassy in Maseru proudly congratulates the people of Lesotho as they celebrate 60 years of independence! This milestone reflects Lesotho's rich heritage, resilience, and enduring democratic spirit.

For 60 years, the United States and Lesotho have worked together to transform lives through health, investment, trade, and security cooperation, building a foundation of trust and shared achievement. Together, we have strengthened health systems, expanded commercial ties, and advanced security in Lesotho and across the region.

The bond between our peoples runs deep. Since 1967, generations of Peace Corps Volunteers have lived alongside families, taught in schools across Lesotho, and learned Sesotho. Those friendships still connect our two nations today.

Lesotho's future belongs to Lesotho's people, and the United States stands with them as they build it. As a sovereign nation, Lesotho is charting its own course toward a resilient and prosperous future. The United States is ready to build that future together through expanded trade, new commercial opportunities, and security cooperation that delivers real results for both nations.

Impact #52: Lesotho now runs a health supply chain that other countries use as a benchmark, made possible by U.S. support.

On September 30, U.S. Public Health Adviser Chris Detwiler joined Minister of Health 'Mamokete Ntšekhe to mark the closeout of the Global Health Supply Chain Program–Procurement and Supply Management. The United States funded the program, and Chemonics International implemented it in partnership with Lesotho's Ministry of Health.

Since 2016, the program has strengthened Lesotho's health supply chain from the national level to the last mile and built the government's capacity to manage essential health supplies. Key results include:

Nationwide visibility: Digital systems now track supply data from health facilities up to the national level.

A regional benchmark: The National Drug Service Organization is now an efficient, data-driven distribution center that other countries model.
Together, these results give Lesotho’s people fair and steady access to essential medical products, including antiretrovirals.

The Government of Lesotho now owns these systems. That handover reflects a core principle of the America First Global Health Strategy: U.S. assistance works best when it builds durable, self-reliant health systems.

U.S. Embassy Maseru just wrapped up a two-week training for 30 Basotho water specialists to prepare for the projected El Niño and plan for hydropower and irrigation development.

Minister of Natural Resources Mohlomi Moleko opened the training remarking that the training would help Lesotho “better manage water, its most precious resource.” It brought together experts from the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority, the Water and Sewerage Company, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Water Resources, and the National University of Lesotho.

Ian Maycumber and Tyler King, U.S. Department of the Interior specialists with the Ambassador's Water Experts Program, trained participants in remote sensing and geospatial planning. These tools help Lesotho track and manage water during drought and changing weather. The group applied data collection skills in the field at Metolong Dam and a Renoka catchment site near Mohale Dam.

During the last week of training, Ian and Tyler trained participants to use AI tools to streamline data management. Participants used these tools to launch dashboards that mapped out Lesotho’s hydropower potential, estimated water demand, and visualized hydrometric levels nationwide in less than 24 hours.

Water is Lesotho's most valuable resource, and the United States is proud to help Basotho experts protect it.

On Day 3 of his visit, CDA Hines saw how the EpiC project has transformed HIV care in Lesotho since October 2025 and heard plans to sustain that progress. The CDA learned of Paray Mission Hospital’s innovative approaches to improving health outcomes and strengthening impressive gains in controlling HIV.

Thaba Tseka became the first district to gain Starlink internet connectivity for health clinics via Palladium – an implementer through the U.S. Embassy – and the Ministry of Health. The CDA saw how Paray Mission Hospital is capitalizing on Starlink’s fast service and Palladium Country Director Teboho Nonyane said plans are underway to connect an additional 207 clinics and hospitals across the country, including in remote areas, to Starlink.

Reliable internet access via Starlink allows health facilities to manage patient records, coordinate with other providers, and access up-to-date medical information, particularly in areas with connectivity challenges. Staff at the hospital said the installation is exactly the type of innovation they need.
