The mandate of the Mission was established for a period of 12 months. As scheduled, UNMIL took over peacekeeping duties from ECOWAS forces on 1 October.

UNMIL Radio is the first radio station in Liberia to broadcast from Monrovia to any part of the country, the first UN Radio facility to broadcast live to the nation and the first radio station in Liberia's history to provide a 24-hour service.The station has gained a reputation for innovative programme concepts and creativity in its packaging of the peace message, as well as respect for its news content as a result of its policy to follow the principles of fair, accurate and balanced reporting.

During a two-day visit to Zwedru the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), Ms. Ellen Margrethe Løj urged Paramount Chiefs and other local elders in the border towns of Grand Gedeh County to assist UNMIL in reporting any case that might pose a threat to the relevant security agencies.

Lofa County, Liberia - The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General for Rule of Law, Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, says the rule of law sector remains in need of support in order to improve access to justice across Liberia. Ms. Mensa-Bonsu made the statement in Lofa County as she handed over to the judicial authorities of Liberia two newly constructed court houses in Kolahun and Foya districts. The buildings were funded through the UN Mission in Liberia Quick Impact Projects scheme.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), Ellen Margrethe Løj, has urged the Judiciary, the Police and all the professionals working in Liberia’s rule of law sector to ensure that every citizen who comes into contact with the legal system is treated with fairness and justice. The UN Envoy was speaking during the handing over ceremony of the Bensonville Magisterial Court in Montserrado County which was renovated with funding from UNMIL’s Quick Impact Projects

United Nations Police Commissioner, Mr Gautam Sawang and Liberia National Police Inspector General Marc Amblard Wednesday graced the handing over of a police depot and a magisterial court to the Government of Liberia, for use by the citizens of Clay Ashland Township in Montserrado County.On Thursday, 21 July 2011, the two personalities had their designees making remarks at a brief ceremony to handover another police depot in Dolo Town and a Joint Security Post in Marshall, Margibi County.

An estimated 22,000 Ivorian Refugees crossed into Liberia between 24‐26 February 2011, more than half the total number of refugees registered between 29 November 2010 and 19 February 2011. Approximately 1,000 Ivorians had also crossed into Zwedru in the same period. The newly arrived refugees claim
they fled to Liberia following the recent clashes in Touleupleu (border with Zwedru), Zouan Houye and Bin Houye (border with Buutuo) areas of Cote d’Ivoire
