Shopping for an engagement ring? Save this guide to understand the main parts of a ring setting.

Key parts explained:
• Center Stone – The primary diamond or gemstone featured in the ring
• Prongs – Small metal claws that secure the stone and affect how much light reaches it
• Head – The top setting that holds and supports the center stone (including the prongs)
• Shank – The band that wraps around the finger; it may be plain or enhanced with side stones
• Gallery – The open area beneath the center stone, usually visible from the side profile
• Hallmarks – Metal stamps found inside (or outside) the shank indicating metal purity and maker details

Understanding these features makes it easier to choose (or customise) a ring .

Be careful - You will get a gemstone with a window.

When a cut and polished gemstone has a window, gemstone won’t give the expected brilliance. It won’t reflect properly. Price will be low for gemstone which has a window. When you buy a cut and polish gem stone check for windows next time.
This happens due to bad cutting.

How to check.
See the gemstone directly without angling it. Put a paper with letters under the gem , if you can see the letters it has a window.

Be careful, gems are not giving the same color in all directions.

As a rough gem buyer , you need to understand the color direction of a gemstone that is called C AXIS .

specially in blue sapphires you need to see the correct color direction , becasue if you can not get the correct color direction to the facet, you cannot not get a good color gem stone.

Use a torch or a dicroscope to identify the correct color direction,
If you dont consider the correct color direction, you will end up with a big loss.
