Sri Lanka’s Export Story is Changing!

For decades, the country’s global identity was built around tea and apparel. Today, technology is steadily becoming part of that conversation.

According to the Export Development Board, Sri Lanka’s total exports reached US$ 5.78 billion in the first four months of 2026, marking a 4.3% year-on-year increase. Apparel & textiles remained the country’s largest export sector at US$ 1.62 billion, continuing to play a critical role in the economy.

But one of the most significant shifts is happening within the country’s knowledge-based industries. In April 2026 alone, Sri Lanka’s ICT/BPM exports reached US$ 146.09 million, surpassing tea exports at US$ 100.02 million for the same period.

While traditional sectors such as apparel (-4.88%) and tea (-6.82%) faced headwinds in April, services and technology-driven industries continued to strengthen. Electrical and electronic component exports surged 41.51% year-on-year, while financial services exports grew 119.41%.

The message is becoming increasingly clear. Sri Lanka is no longer defined only by traditional exports. The country is steadily emerging as a serious technology and services hub powered by competitive talent, strong engineering capability, and growing international relevance.

Calcey Team recently concluded a successful visit to Japan, engaging with prospective customers and strategic partners through 20+ B2B meetings, alongside 60+ conversations during the 3 day Japan IT Week exhibition at Tokyo Big Sight. Exploring opportunities in product engineering, AI solutions, and long-term technology partnerships.

The visit opened promising discussions around product engineering, AI solutions, and long term collaboration opportunities in the Japanese market.
