A team of MIT engineers have created a solution for robotics' "last foot problem:", where they can squeeze into tight spaces by using soft robotic materials, but are usually not sturdy enough to be fitted with tools like sensors, grippers and cameras. Instead of designing a soft robot, they made a flexible one inspired by growing plants; made of rigid material, with appendages like bicycle chains, capable of carrying heavy loads, allowing it to twist and turn into whatever configuration is needed to reach its objective.
