🛑 What Should I Do? A Real Talk for Sri Lankan Undergrads to focus on this New Year

Happy New Year in advance, everyone! 🎇 While everyone is getting ready to celebrate the Avurudda and enjoying the sweets, I know some of you are feeling pretty heavy today.

Let’s be honest: the job market right now is cooked. 🍳 Thousands of grads are coming out of uni, and there just aren't enough traditional jobs waiting for you. It’s draining, it's depressing, and it's totally normal to look at your degree and think, What was the point of all this?"

If you’re feeling completely lost today, let’s use this New Year to actually hit the reset button. The old way of doing things is over. Here’s a raw, realistic game plan to survive and actually build something.

1. Stop waiting for the "regular" job to save you 🚫

Relying on a standard corporate job or a government post is a massive gamble right now. If you just apply as a generic "business grad," you'll drown in the pile. You need to get super specific. Don't just be a generic IT guy; be a cloud security guy for fintech startups. Find a niche that's actually growing and claim it.

2. Do more than just study (Start a side hustle) 💻

Degrees are great, but while you learn, you have to build proof of work. You don't need to become a massive freelancer overnight, but start a side project. Write articles, create some content, or build a tiny app. Crucial tip: Make it something you actually care about. If you chase a side hustle just for the money, you'll burn out. Do something you love, and it'll feel like a break, not a chore.

3. Your personal brand > Your certificates 📜

In Sri Lanka, we love hoarding certificates. Personally I do have 100+ valid certificates from well-known E-learning organisations around the world (check it out by yourself, https://www.linkedin.com/in/machinelearningzuu/😁) but in 2026, a certificate is just a basic entry ticket. People need to know who you are. You need to be loud about your skills. If you're studying marketing, break down local ad campaigns on LinkedIn. If you're coding, share your project portfolio. Be consistent, be passionate, and show the world you actually exist.

4. Drop the overnight success fantasy ⏳

We all want to go viral or land a dream role in three months. Forget it. If you start something today, plan to stick with it for the next 12-18 months. Be patient, ignore the people who laugh at your early attempts, and just keep your head down. Consistency will beat talent every single time.

5. Cut through the noise (Especially with AI) 🧠

The internet is 95% hype and garbage right now. Everyone is an "expert" overnight. Don't fall for the noise. Stop endlessly scrolling motivational fluff on YouTube. Dive deep instead. Read Medium articles that actually show you how to build things. Hang out in specific Reddit communities or niche tech subs where people are having real, unfiltered conversations. Change what you consume, and you'll change how you think.

Guys, the sun will up on this new year. The old map doesn't work anymore, so let's draw a new one. Stop waiting for someone to hand you an opportunity and start building your own.

We just wrapped up Week 02 of the Finetuning Sprint at the AI Engineer Essentials Bootcamp Zuu Crew AI🚀

Most "Deep Learning" tutorials stop at trainer.train(). They show you a loss curve going down and call it a day. But in the real world, a model with a low loss is not a product. it’s just a file.

Yesterday, we didn't just finetune a model; we built a deployable Medical AI System.

Here is the engineering reality we covered:

✅ The Data Engine We moved beyond CSVs. We architected robust ChatML pipelines because "garbage in, garbage out" kills production apps.
✅ The Hardware Hack We used QLoRA and 4-bit quantization to fit state-of-the-art models (Qwen 2.5) onto commodity hardware (Colab T4s). No A100s required.
✅ Real Evals We didn't rely on "Vibes" or exact-match metrics. We built an LLM-as-a-Judge pipeline to grade semantic accuracy.
✅ Safety & Guardrails We Red Teamed our own models. If a medical bot gives toxic advice, you are liable. We ensured ours refused harmful prompts systematically.
✅ Deployment We didn't leave the model in Python. We merged the adapters and exported to GGUF so it runs offline on a laptop using llama.cpp.

This isn't just about changing weights. It’s about moving from being a Prompt Engineer to a Model Engineer.
