A NASA tech briefing "Using Spider-Web
Patterns To Determine Toxicity' was
published in April 1995.
In this, researchers David A. Noever, Ray-
mond J. Cronise, and Rachna A. Relwani
of the agency's Marshall Space Flight Center outlined an experiment in which they
exposed spiders to various chemicals.

According to the briefing, the purpose of
the study was to examine how toxica
chemical is by exposing spiders to it and
comparing how their webs differed to that
of a normal spider web.

The researchers said this approach
to toxicity testing could serve as an
alternative to testing harmful chemicals
on what they referred to as "higher
animals," which they said was "becoming
increasingly restricted by law."

Because light travels faster in the air than in water,
it is refracted at the water's surface before being
scattered or absorbed by solid particles. The majority
of light is absorbed within 10 meters (32 ft.), and
nothing reaches deeper than 150 meters (492 ft.).

Colors in the visible spectrum of light such as red,
yellow, and orange have longer wavelengths and may
reach depths of 15, 30, and 50 meters (50, 100, and
164 ft.), respectively. Violet, blue, and green light have
shorter wavelengths and may travel further
underwater. Blue is the color that reaches the
deepest, which is why ocean water and other tropical
waters seem blue in the majority of situations.
