๐ฑ THE LIFE IN THE SOIL
The Secret to a Thriving Garden
Two Roots Garden Cambodia ๐ฐ๐ญ
โSoil is not dirt. Soil is a living community.โ
At Two Roots Garden Cambodia, we believe that farming begins beneath our feet.
Before we think about harvesting vegetables, planting fruit trees, or building a food forest, we first ask a simple question:
Is the soil alive?
Healthy soil is not an empty growing medium. It is a living ecosystem filled with bacteria, fungi, earthworms, insects, roots, organic matter, water, air, and countless interactions that we cannot always see.
A handful of healthy soil can contain an enormous community of microorganisms. These tiny organisms help decompose organic matter, cycle nutrients, build soil structure, support plant roots, and contribute to the natural fertility of the land.
This is why, at Two Roots Garden, we don't see soil as something to exploit. We see it as something to care for.
๐ฟ WHEN THE SOIL IS ALIVE, THE GARDEN CAN THRIVE
Plants do not grow in isolation.
A tree is connected to the soil.
The soil is connected to fungi.
Fungi interact with roots.
Roots feed microorganisms.
Microorganisms help cycle nutrients.
Leaves fall back to the ground.
Organic matter returns to the soil.
And the cycle continues.
This is nature's farming system.
When soil is repeatedly disturbed, left bare, compacted, eroded, or deprived of organic matter, its biological activity can decline. The result can be poorer soil structure, reduced water-holding capacity, nutrient losses and greater dependence on external inputs.
We don't want to fight the soil. We want to work with it.
That is one of the foundations of our approach to Syntropic Fostering and regenerative food-forest development.
๐ชฑ HOW CAN WE SEE IF OUR SOIL IS ALIVE?
You don't need an expensive laboratory to begin observing your soil.
You can start with your hands, your eyes, and a little curiosity.
A simple soil-life observation
1. Choose several areas of your garden.
Select at least three representative locations rather than relying on one small sample.
2. Carefully dig into the soil.
A sample around 20 ร 20 ร 20 cm can provide a useful field observation.
3. Place the soil on a tray or clean surface.
Break the soil apart gently with your hands.
4. Look carefully.
Search for:
๐ชฑ Earthworms
๐ Ants
๐ชฒ Beetles
๐ Larvae and grubs
๐ท๏ธ Spiders
๐ Termites
๐ Fungal threads
๐ฑ Fine plant roots
๐ Decomposing organic matter
Other small soil organisms
5. Record what you find.
You can compare different areas of the garden over time.
The purpose is not simply to produce a number.
The purpose is to learn to see the soil as an ecosystem.
โWhen we learn to see the life beneath our feet, we begin to understand the life above it.โ
๐ฌ THE INVISIBLE FARMERS
Not all of the farmers in our garden can be seen.
Bacteria and fungi are working continuously around plant roots and within decomposing organic matter.
These microorganisms participate in nutrient cycling and decomposition. Some fungi form relationships with plant roots known as mycorrhizae, helping plants explore a larger volume of soil for water and nutrients while receiving carbon compounds from the plant.
Plants also release carbon-rich compounds through their roots. These root exudates help support microbial communities around the roots.
It is a remarkable exchange:
Plants feed soil life.
Soil life helps plants.
Organic matter feeds the system.
The system builds the soil.
This is one reason we don't want to simply feed plants with soluble nutrients and forget the soil.
We want to feed the ecosystem.
๐ FEED THE SOIL, NOT JUST THE PLANT
At Two Roots Garden, organic matter is not rubbish.
Leaves, branches, plant residues, mulch, compost and other suitable organic materials can become part of the soil-building cycle.
Instead of asking:
โHow can I remove everything from the garden?โ
we ask:
โHow can I return more life to the garden?โ
Leaves become mulch.
Branches become habitat and organic matter.
Plant residues become food for decomposers.
Compost becomes a source of organic matter and nutrients.
Living roots keep the soil connected to plants.
Over time, these practices can help build a more biologically active and resilient growing system.
๐ณ BRINGING TIRED SOIL BACK TO LIFE
Poor soil is not necessarily a permanent condition.
Soil can change.
At Two Roots Garden, we focus on practical actions that support the living system.
๐ฟ Keep the soil covered
Bare soil is vulnerable to intense tropical sun, heavy rain, erosion and moisture loss.
Living plants and organic mulch can protect the surface.
๐ Return organic matter
Compost, suitable manure, leaves and plant residues can return carbon and nutrients to the soil.
๐ฑ Keep living roots in the ground
Cover crops, groundcovers and diverse plantings help keep biological activity going between harvests.
๐ช Reduce unnecessary disturbance
Constant intensive tillage can disrupt soil structure, fungal networks and soil habitats.
We prefer to disturb the soil only when there is a good reason.
๐ง Protect the water cycle
Healthy soil structure and organic matter can improve infiltration and water retention, reducing the impact of heavy rain and dry periods.
๐ Encourage biodiversity
A healthy garden is not just vegetables.
It includes trees, shrubs, herbs, groundcovers, insects, fungi, birds, decomposers and microorganisms.
Diversity creates relationships. Relationships create resilience.
๐ SOIL, CARBON AND CLIMATE
Healthy soil is also part of the carbon story.
Plants capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. Some of that carbon becomes plant material, while some is transferred below ground through roots and eventually enters soil organic matter.
But soil carbon is not automatically permanent.
It can be lost through erosion, decomposition, disturbance and other processes.
That is why regeneration is not simply about โputting carbon into the soil.โ
It is about building a functioning ecosystem that continually produces organic matter, protects the soil and supports living roots.
At Two Roots Garden, carbon is not a slogan. It is part of the living cycle.
Sunlight becomes plant growth.
Plant growth becomes organic matter.
Organic matter feeds soil life.
Soil life helps build the ecosystem.
And the cycle begins again.
๐ฑ SYNTHROPIC FOSTERING AT TWO ROOTS GARDEN
Our goal is not to copy nature perfectly.
Our goal is to learn from nature.
In our garden, we work with principles of syntropic agriculture, regenerative soil management, food-forest development and local Khmer gardening knowledge.
We combine different layers and stages of vegetation so that the garden becomes more productive and more ecologically complex over time.
Trees create structure.
Shrubs occupy another layer.
Herbs and vegetables use the spaces below.
Groundcovers protect the soil.
Roots explore different levels underground.
Pruning and returning organic material can help maintain the growth cycle.
Instead of treating every plant as an isolated crop, we look at the whole system.
The garden becomes an ecosystem, not just a field of crops.
๐ชฑ THE WEALTH BENEATH OUR FEET
A farmer can look across a field and see only vegetables.
But beneath those vegetables may be an entire world.
Earthworms moving through the soil.
Fungi connecting with roots.
Bacteria decomposing organic matter.
Insects breaking down residues.
Roots creating channels.
Water moving through pores.
Carbon moving between plants, soil and atmosphere.
This is the hidden economy of the garden.
And it is one of the greatest resources a farmer has.
โThe harvest above the ground begins with life below the ground.โ
๐พ OUR PROMISE AT TWO ROOTS GARDEN
We are not trying to create a perfect garden.
We are creating a learning garden.
A place where children can discover soil.
Where farmers can exchange knowledge.
Where volunteers can learn by doing.
Where communities can see how food, trees, water, soil and people are connected.
Where we can experiment, observe, make mistakes, learn and improve.
Because regeneration is not a one-day project.
It is a relationship with the land.
๐ฑ TWO ROOTS GARDEN CAMBODIA ๐ฐ๐ญ
Grow Food. Restore Soil. Regenerate Life.
We believe the future of farming does not begin with stronger chemicals or more machines.
It begins with understanding.
Understand the soil.
Understand the water.
Understand the plants.
Understand the insects.
Understand the trees.
Understand the seasons.
Understand the relationships.
Then work with them.
Feed the soil. Protect the soil. Keep it covered. Keep it alive.
Because when we take care of the living foundation beneath our feet, we are not only growing food for today.
We are helping build a garden that can continue feeding life tomorrow.

๐ Soil Regeneration, Carbon, and Why Healthy Soil Matters
Healthy soil is the foundation of every thriving ecosystem. Without healthy soil, forests decline, crops become weaker, water is lost more quickly, and biodiversity decreases.
At Two Roots Garden Cambodia, we believe that restoring soil is one of the most important actions we can take for the future of people and nature.
What Is Soil Regeneration?
Soil regeneration is the process of rebuilding living, fertile soil through natural biological processes rather than depending primarily on synthetic fertilizers.
Instead of simply feeding plants, we focus on feeding the entire soil ecosystem, including bacteria, fungi, earthworms, insects, and countless other organisms. These living communities recycle nutrients, improve soil structure, and help plants grow naturally.
Healthy soil is alive.
A single teaspoon of healthy soil can contain billions of microorganisms working together to support plant life.
Soil and Carbon
Plants remove carbon dioxide (COโ) from the atmosphere through photosynthesis.
They use sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugars that fuel their growth.
A significant portion of these sugars is transferred through the roots into the soil, where microorganisms convert some of this carbon into stable soil organic matter. This process stores carbon in the ground and helps build healthier soils.
When land is degraded through erosion, repeated burning, excessive tillage, or the loss of vegetation, much of this stored carbon can be released back into the atmosphere.
Regenerative farming practices help increase soil organic matter, which supports soil health and can contribute to greater long-term carbon storage.
Why Organic Matter Matters
Organic matter acts like nature's sponge.
It helps the soil:
- Store more water.
- Improve drainage during heavy rain.
- Reduce erosion.
- Feed soil organisms.
- Supply nutrients to plants.
- Build stable soil structure.
- Increase resilience during drought.
As organic matter increases, soils generally become healthier and more productive.
The Carbon Cycle in Our Garden
Every leaf, branch, root, and piece of mulch plays a role in the carbon cycle.
Instead of burning plant material or throwing it away, we return it to the soil.
Through composting, mulching, pruning, and careful biomass management, plant material is recycled into new life.
This creates a continuous cycle of growth, decomposition, and renewal.
In nature, nothing is wasted.
Biochar and Long-Term Carbon Storage
At Two Roots Garden, we also use biochar where appropriate.
Biochar is charcoal produced from plant material under low-oxygen conditions.
When added correctly to biologically active soil, biochar can improve water retention, provide habitat for beneficial microorganisms, and contribute to long-term carbon storage.
It works best when combined with compost or other organic materials rather than used on its own.
Why This Matters for Cambodia
Healthy soils can help farms and gardens become more resilient.
Regenerating soil can:
- Improve food production.
- Reduce erosion during heavy rains.
- Increase water-holding capacity during dry periods.
- Support biodiversity.
- Reduce dependence on expensive external inputs.
- Strengthen local food security.
- Improve the long-term productivity of family gardens.
What Volunteers Can Do
Every volunteer contributes to soil regeneration by:
- Applying mulch.
- Making compost.
- Planting diverse species.
- Protecting bare soil.
- Returning biomass to the land.
- Avoiding unnecessary disturbance.
- Observing and caring for the living soil.
Every handful of compost, every tree planted, and every layer of mulch contributes to a healthier ecosystem.
Healthy soil is more than dirt beneath our feetโit is a living community that supports forests, farms, wildlife, and people. By restoring soil, we help create resilient landscapes that can nourish future generations while supporting biodiversity and storing more carbon over time.

People often say Cambodia is losing its forests. The truth is more complex.
Cambodia has experienced significant deforestation over the past few decades, especially outside protected landscapes. Yet it also remains one of Southeast Asia's most important strongholds for wild nature. Both statements can be true.
Around 41% of Cambodia's land is officially designated as protected or conserved, making it one of the highest proportions in Southeast Asia. These landscapes include national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, protected forests, and multiple-use areas that shelter remarkable biodiversityโfrom Asian elephants and clouded leopards to hornbills, gibbons, and thousands of native plant species.
Protection on paper is only the beginning.
A forest survives because living systems are allowed to function. Trees build soil. Fungi connect roots. Water follows living landscapes. Birds, insects, microbes, and people all become part of the same regenerative cycle. Nature is not saved by fences aloneโit is restored by relationships.
That is the lesson we carry into our work at Two Roots Garden.
Every tree planted with diversity. Every patch of soil covered. Every drop of rain slowed and absorbed. Every species welcomed back.
Regeneration doesn't begin with planting a forest. It begins with learning how forests think.
๐ฑ Nature has been building healthy ecosystems for millions of years. Our role is not to control them, but to become good partners in the process.

๐ฟ Two Roots Garden Cambodia | Every Tree Matters ๐
Every minute, our planet loses the equivalent of around 11 football fields of tropical primary rainforest. These are not ordinary forestsโthey are some of the oldest living ecosystems on Earth, shaped over centuries and filled with life that exists nowhere else.
In 2024, the world lost approximately 4.3 million hectares of tropical primary rainforest, according to the Global Forest Watch 2025 report. With every hectare destroyed, we lose more than trees. We lose wildlife habitats, fertile soils, clean water, and one of nature's greatest defenses against climate change.
Ancient rainforests store enormous amounts of carbon, help regulate rainfall, protect rivers, and support countless plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms that keep ecosystems healthy. Once a primary forest is destroyed, it cannot simply be replanted or replaced within our lifetime.
At Two Roots Garden Cambodia, we believe the future begins with restoration. Through syntropic food forest principles, we work with nature instead of against itโplanting diverse species, rebuilding healthy soil, creating habitat for wildlife, and demonstrating that food production and ecosystem restoration can grow together.
We may be a small garden, but meaningful change begins with small actions repeated every day. Every tree planted, every pollinator protected, every healthy soil restored, and every person inspired becomes part of a larger movement to regenerate the Earth.
