Last week, we hosted an incredibly impactful Code Club Mentors Training, and the energy in the room was nothing short of inspiring

We took a deep dive into what a Code Club truly is not just a space to learn coding, but a platform to spark curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving among young learners. We explored how to successfully start and run a club, from structuring sessions to creating an inclusive and engaging environment where every learner feels empowered.

A definite highlight? The “robot exercise” 🤖
Participants had to give and follow step-by-step instructions like robots a fun but powerful way to demonstrate the importance of clear logic, precision, and sequencing in coding. It brought plenty of laughs, but also some great “aha” moments!

We also got hands-on with Scratch, introducing mentors to block-based programming and interactive storytelling. Watching everyone experiment, collaborate, and bring ideas to life in real-time was a reminder that anyone can start their tech journey with the right support.

Beyond the technical skills, we emphasized the critical role mentors play not just as instructors, but as guides, motivators, and role models shaping the next generation of innovators.

We’re incredibly grateful for the enthusiasm, openness, and commitment shown by every participant. This is how real impact begins by equipping passionate individuals with the tools and confidence to lead change in their communities.

The journey doesn’t stop here. We’re excited to see these mentors go out, start their own Code Clubs, and inspire countless young minds to explore the world of technology.

Colmena: Powering Local Content from the Ground Up 16/03/2026

Our founder Douglas Mzelo was recently featured on the Connected Voice Podcast 🎙️, where he spoke about Colmena and the importance of affordable internet access in Mathare, Nairobi.

In this insightful conversation, Douglas explores Colmena — an offline-first, mobile-friendly, open-source media toolbox designed to support local and community content production.

The episode breaks down the what, why, and how of Colmena, making it a great introduction for anyone new to the platform.

Beyond the technology, the discussion highlights the power of local content and how grassroots communities can use digital tools to:

Tell their own stories
Preserve culture and local knowledge
Shape conversations that matter to their communities

At the heart of it all is a simple but powerful idea: when communities have the right tools, they can amplify their own voices.
