Renting in Rome - Helpmate
I am Marie Helene and I offer English/Italian translation services to make your move to Rome seamless.
I can assist you with scheduling viewings, reviewing contracts, setting up utilities and more, so that you can start living La Dolce Vita.
Last night I had the honour of speaking at the conference in Rome on navigating the Italian real estate market alongside some incredible female industry leaders and our moderator .sirolli 🇮🇹
We talked about the realities people don’t always expect when moving to Italy:• how fast the rental market moves• why landlords can be extremely selective• hidden upfront costs• cultural differences• rental scams• contracts, documentation & communication barriers
Italy is beautiful but navigating real estate here as a foreigner can also be overwhelming if you don’t understand how the system actually works.
That’s exactly why I created Helpmate Rome: to help bridge the gap between language, culture, and bureaucracy so people can move forward with clarity and confidence towards finding their dream home in Italy.
Grateful to share the stage with such inspiring women in real estate and international business ✨
Rome continues to remind me how powerful women supporting women can be.

Everyone dreams about renting by the sea until they actually start searching 🌊🇮🇹
What most foreigners don’t realize is that long-term seaside rentals in Italy are incredibly rare, especially in summer.
Many homes are:
• family vacation properties
• rented weekly for tourism
• booked months in advance
• never even listed online
The Italian rental market works very differently than North America
If you’re planning a move to Italy, understanding how locals actually rent can save you a LOT of stress.

I help expats find apartments in Rome, here’s what surprises people most ⬇️⬇️⬇️
🇮🇹 Apartments can disappear in hours
📄 Some contracts include clauses people don’t understand
☎️ Agents often respond faster to calls than messages
💰 “Affordable” rents can come with extra condo/utilities fees
🏡 The right apartment often comes through networking, not portals
Moving to Rome is dreamy… apartment hunting can be another story.
That’s why I help expats navigate viewings, contracts, and the rental process in English.
Save this if Rome is on your radar.

It’s usually not personal.

If you’re moving to Rome in 2026 here is everything you should know…
• Rental prices are rising as new short-term rental regulations push more demand into the long term & transitorio market.
• The best apartments are often off market and shared privately before they ever go online. (It helps to have boots on the ground in Rome)
• More foreigners than ever are relocating to Italy, which means you’re competing globally.
• Landlords are becoming more selective and strong documentation is essential to secure a lease.
• Certain neighborhoods are evolving quickly, and local knowledge can help you find better value and lifestyle fit.

What Italian landlords REALLY care about…
It’s not your budget…
➡️ It’s your profile
➡️ It’s your job stability
➡️ It’s your long term mindset
➡️ Your references
➡️ Whether or not you speak Italian.
That’s where I come in, I can communicate to the landlord, real estate agent and utilities companies on your behalf. I can help you understand how to make yourself appear as the most attractive tenant, review your contract and set up your utilities for you.

3 Things That Shock Foreigners When Renting in Rome …
1. You’re responsible for paying the real estate commission fee. Most agencies ask for either one months rent or 15 -20 percent of the yearly rent.
2. Most agencies and landlords want you to show proof of income in an Italian bank account. Think your foreign account will suffice? Think again.
3. You have to read the fine print of the contract. Some rentals come unfurnished. This could mean the apartment comes without a kitchen.
