🇬🇧Another field season in Cape Akritas (Greece) has come to an end. This year we counted more than 17,000 raptors over 27 observation days, confirming this site as one of the main migration hotspots in the Mediterranean basin.

🇮🇹 È sorprendente che, dopo oltre trent’anni di ricerca in tutto il bacino del Mediterraneo, sia ancora possibile scoprire luoghi sorvolati da un vero e proprio “fiume di rapaci”, e che nessuno se ne fosse accorto prima! Dal “dito” più occidentale del Peloponneso, in Grecia, abbiamo contato quasi 12.000 rapaci, ma con un monitoraggio che copra l’intera stagione, il numero potrebbe probabilmente superare i 15.000. Questi dati evidenziano Akritas come il terzo hotspot più importante per la migrazione dei rapaci attraverso il Mediterraneo, dopo Gibilterra e Messina. La maggior parte di questi rapaci sono falchi pecchiaioli, provenienti dall’Europa orientale, che iniziano una traversata di oltre 400 km verso la Libia.
Fortunatamente, i piani per la costruzione di un parco eolico in questa zona sono stati respinti nell’aprile 2025, forse anche grazie all’attività della Hellenic Ornithological Society, supportata dai dati di questo studio. Si spera che ora sia possibile avviare un programma di monitoraggio della migrazione a lungo termine.

🇬🇧 It is remarkable that, after more than 30 years of research across the Mediterranean basin, it is still possible to discover places where a "raptor river" takes place, which remained so far undetected! From the westernmost “toe” of the Peloponnesus, in Greece, we counted almost 12.000 raptors, but with full-season coverage, the number could probably exceed 15.000. These data highlight Akritas as the third most important hotspot for raptors crossing the Med, after Gibraltar and Messina. These raptors are mostly honey buzzards, coming from Eastern Europe, which start a sea-crossing of more than 400 km, towards Libya.
Fortunately, plans to construct a windfarm in this region were rejected in April 2025, potentially thanks to lobbying efforts by the Hellenic Ornithological Society, supported by data from this study. Hopefully, a long-term migration monitoring programme will be established.
