In this 1996 interview filmed near the Mayan temples of Palenque, Mexico, Terence McKenna unpacks the problem with the word “drugs.” To McKenna, the term isn’t just vague—it’s weaponized. A catch-all category that erases nuance, blurs sacred from profane, and renders honest discourse nearly impossible. O***m, psilocybin, Prozac, DMT, aspirin—all flattened under a single, corrupted label. For McKenna, refining our language is the first step toward unlocking the positive potential of psychedelics. Today, many continue the work of linguistic reclamation. For example, psychiatrist Dr. Stanislav Grof prefers “non-ordinary states of consciousness” over “altered states,” arguing that the latter implies pathology. His term reframes expanded consciousness as potentially authentic and healing. Others speak of “plant medicines” or “entheogens” instead of “hallucinogens,” centering intention, tradition, and reverence over clinical detachment. McKenna’s point remains urgent: language shapes thought—and thought shapes culture. If we want to move beyond prohibition and fear, the first step is to say what we mean.
