Bricks are one of the oldest building materials, but the way we use them can completely change the impact of a building. The Rat Trap Bond is a classic example of frugal engineering, where bricks are placed on edge to create air cavities inside the wall. This simple shift reduces material use, lowers embodied energy, improves insulation, and keeps the structure lighter without changing the look of traditional brickwork.

Smart construction isn’t always about new materials — sometimes it’s about using the same brick in a better way.

Rat Trap Bond is a smart example of frugal engineering. The wall looks solid from outside, but inside it has air cavities that make the structure lighter, more efficient, and more sustainable. Using about 25% fewer bricks and 40% less mortar reduces embodied carbon, while the air gap works as natural insulation to keep interiors cooler in summer and warmer in winter. The exposed brick pattern also removes the need for plaster and paint, saving even more material and energy.

An approach rooted in recognizing the inherent value of what exists. Rather than replacing, it focuses on adapting with clarity and intention—allowing spaces to evolve while preserving their identity and significance.

Adaptive continuity acknowledges that permanence and change are not opposites, but part of the same process. It enables transformation that respects context, extends lifespan, and maintains relevance.

Sustainability, in this sense, is achieved not through constant newness, but through the deliberate and responsible evolution of the existing.

Project: B.P.A.H., Surat

Tucked in the heart of Surat—right along one of its busiest roads—B.P.A.H. stands as a quiet, thoughtful response to a chaotic urban setting. What makes it special isn’t just its exposed brick or efficient planning, but the way it embraces nature, context, and community.

Surrounded by large, decades-old trees, 98% of which were preserved through careful planning and construction, the campus enjoys a natural green shield, insulating its learning spaces from the city's noise and heat. Spanning 35,000 S.Ft., the institution houses state-of-the-art classrooms and labs that meet the latest academic standards, while also fostering a deeper connection between the built and the unbuilt through serene indoor garden courts.

Aligned along the East-West axis, the building opens itself to soft northern light through large windows, flooding the labs, and classrooms with daylight. Meanwhile, the southern and western edges are protected with wide corridors edged with greens and massive walls that quieten the city’s chaos outside.

More than 80% of the building is naturally ventilated and non-air-conditioned, yet it remains thermally comfortable due to the thoughtful passive design. And with rooftop solar panels powering its needs—and more—the campus quietly gives back more energy than it consumes on a daily basis, thereby making it net-positive in energy use.

B.P.A.H. isn’t just a place to learn—it’s a space that teaches by example.
