WKF OFFICIAL RULE CHANGES – 2026 SUMMARY

KUMITE

• No kicking a fallen opponent(only hand techniques allowed)
• Zanshin required after scoring (turning your back or falling may cancel points)
• Light contact clarified:
– Hand techniques: up to ~5 cm
– Kicks: up to ~10 cm
• No Jogai penalty if you score before stepping out
• No double penalty (If your opponent scores a valid point and you stepped out: you do not receive a Jogai penalty for stepping out, only the opponent’s point will be awarded)
• Faster & clearer video review system (coaches’ can choose 1, 2, or 3-point challenges)
• Excessive celebration is prohibited (over-the-top reactions or theatrical displays may be penalized)

EQUIPMENT & UNIFORMS
• Altered or manipulated karate-gi not permitted
• Only approved white WKF karate-gi allowed
• Medical sports eyewear now allowed in kata
• Headgear mandatory for kumite athletes under 14 


COACHES & OFFICIALS
• Coaches cannot act as referees in the same competition year
• National Federation Presidents can no longer register as coaches
• Athlete-coaches must choose to compete OR coach — not both in the same event
