Back in 1976, Volvo built the Volvo EC (Elbil), an electric concept car designed for zero-emission urban mobility. Powered by lead-acid batteries, it could reach 70 km/hr and travel around 50 km on a single charge, nearly five decades before EVs became mainstream.

Meet the Volvo Experimental Safety Car (VESC), unveiled in 1972. Built at a time when global road safety was becoming a major focus, the VESC showcased innovations that would only become common in production cars decades later. From airbags and anti-lock brakes to a rear-view camera and an impact-absorbing bumper designed to withstand an 80 km/h frontal collision, this concept proved just how far ahead Volvo was thinking.

With a 94 HP 4-cylinder engine and only three examples built, the VESC remains one of the most influential safety concept cars ever created.
