Can Indian farmers still afford to plant Alphonso? 🥭

This year, more farmers in Konkan are planting Kesar than Alphonso 🥭

Not because they love Alphonso any less.

But because waiting 10–15 years for a tree to bear fruit is becoming a luxury few can afford.

An Alphonso orchard asks for patience long before it offers reward. Years of watering, fertilising, pruning and protection. Years of uncertainty. Years of hoping the next season will justify the last.

And even then, there are no promises.

A tree can receive everything it needs and still fall short of expectations. A change in weather, a pest outbreak, an untimely spell of rain and years of effort can suddenly feel fragile.

On the other hand, Kesar mango offers a different equation.

It begins bearing fruit much earlier, often within 4–5 years. It demands less from the farmer, requires fewer interventions, and provides a quicker path to income.

For many growers, that difference matters.

Because farming isn’t only about growing the best fruit.

It’s about surviving long enough to grow the next crop.

With rising input costs, unpredictable rainfall, water scarcity, labour shortages and increasingly erratic weather, every season asks more of the farmer than the last.

And when a crop demands years of investment before it begins to pay back, the risk becomes harder to carry.

For many growers, the shift from Alphonso to Kesar isn’t a matter of preference.

It’s a matter of practicality.

The question is whether Alphonso will remains India’s most celebrated mango and will the farming realities still allow farmers to grow it❓
