India's love for gold is not just cultural, it is economic too.
India produces only around 1-2 tonnes of gold annually, but consumes nearly 700-800 tonnes every year, driven by weddings, festivals, jewellery demand, investment buying and household savings.
Because domestic production is extremely low, India depends on imports for more than 90% of its gold requirement. This makes gold one of the major pressure points on India's import bill and foreign exchange reserves.
In simple words, the gold Indians buy mostly comes from outside India

PM Modi has made a major appeal to all Indians under the "Nation First" campaign to help reduce import dependence, save energy, and strengthen India's economic resilience amid global uncertainty.
PM Modi appealed to citizens to:
1.Prioritise work from home wherever possible
2. Avoid buying gold for one year
3.Reduce petrol and diesel consumption by using metro and public transport
4.Cut down the use of cooking oil
5. Reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers and move toward natural farming
6. Use fewer foreign-branded products and adopt Swadeshi
7. Avoid foreign travel for one year
The government said these measures are aimed at improving energy security, saving foreign exchange reserves, promoting sustainable lifestyles, and encouraging self-reliance under the "Nation First" vision.
