Mahalaya marks the beginning of the Devi Paksha and is considered the day when Devi Durga descends on earth from Mount Kailash. Bengalis globally look forward to this day and begin it by listening to “Mahishasur Mardini” on radio at 4 AM. The holy Ritual of painting the eyes of Devi Durga is done on this day . Many people also perform ‘Tarpan’ or offer prayers to their departed ancestors.
This year, Vishwakarma Puja coincides with Mahalaya making today highly auspicious. Lord Vishwakarma is regarded as the swayambhu and divine carpenter-who built the world. People worship Him along with their machines and vehicles for smooth operations and a safe workplace . The day is celebrated enthusiastically by the industrial community.

"Work hard, work harder, work with efficiency, work in cooperative spirit, work with a team spirit to make the country great, self supporting and strong" -Sir. M. Visvesvaraya
Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was an Indian civil engineer. He received India's highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955.His birthday, 15 September, is celebrated as Engineers' Day in India in his memory. He was the Chief Engineer of Krishna Raja Sagara dam and also served as one of the Chief Engineers of the flood protection system in the city of Hyderabad.
According to him, "Your work may be only to sweep a railway crossing but it is your duty to keep it so clean that no other crossing in the world is as clean as yours". This thought itself tells enough about perfection and dedication that one should keep in our work. Engineers are the people who transform imaginations into reality. They not only work for the enhancement of technology but also the society as a whole. The life and words of Sir Visvesvaraya are motivation to all the engineers.
The Electrical Engineers' Society takes this day as an opportunity to appreciate the contribution of all the engineers, wishing them a very Happy Engineers' Day!
