AI – THE CHOICE AND THE WORK AHEAD FOR YOUTH
AI is a capability that fundamentally changes the way we understand and manage our world, industries, and lives in general. It helps to process information at a scale and speed unimaginable even a few years ago. It is helping us with reasoning and analytic capabilities that can accelerate progress in medicine, natural resource management, planning, and many other complex decision-making. And, with several tools, it is becoming accessible to everyone in a democratic manner.
AI AND HUMAN COGNITION
What is really important is to understand how AI is converging with the way human cognition has evolved and how inventions and innovations have helped shape the way we live in this world. It is critical that we understand how AI is opening entirely new ways to see, analyse, and understand our world. It is equally important to see how the future of AI need to be shaped.
Intelligence is a product of our ability to be involved in conscious intellectual activity, such as thinking, reasoning, and remembering. When AI is integrated into our cognitive processes, the result is a powerful engine for taking smarter decisions. It gives us the ability to integrate multiple perspectives, domains of expertise, and evaluate options that support a more efficient and sustainable decision-making. Data in Emergencies Information System (DIEM) is an example. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization is tracking the impact using DIEM—a system that blends AI with geographic (location) intelligence to monitor food security across 27 countries in near real time.
AI AND ANALOGICAL THINKING
Having the capability to process data is not the same as having knowledge. This is where our cognitive processes come in. There are multiple ways of looking at historical information (past), what is happening around us (present), and how things will shape up (future). The novel ways in which we can correlate seemingly disparate or incongruent situations, strategies, or solutions is a strength that would be hard to replace. This power of analogical thinking is at the core of cognitive processes, that is greatly aided by the efficiency and speed with which AI can integrate and help us handle multiple sources of data. The scale of the relevant data that can be brought together at our fingertips, literally and figuratively, and the speed with which it is made available is helped by AI.
It is the individual who has to make sure that what is correlated automatically (AI) is blended with the inherent nature of heuristics, curiosity, and purpose (human). This is what will shape the way human insight and the craft evolve, as well as how AI of the future will be meaningful and relevant. Thus, the future AI systems will help surface insight in an increasingly democratised way. But it is human judgment that will help make it more relevant and evolved. Otherwise, stagnation will be fast to catch up!
COMPETENCIES FOR THE AI WORLD
The people who thrive will be those who are able to bring in heuristics, make creative connections, visualize multiple perspectives, ask the right questions to make evaluations, and possess all of craft, passion, and purpose.
These are not new skills and capabilities. They’re the competencies of good scientists, planners, and leaders. AI simply makes them more essential—and more widely necessary.
FORESIGHT AND WILLINGNESS
The risk is clear.
Should we depend only on tools to do the thinking and just optimise the output and end up as less responsible? or
Should we develop our understanding and powers of cognition to strengthen human judgment?
This is a choice.
The future is within reach. Only, it requires intention—and the foresight and willingness to develop the competencies that make us responsible players in an increasingly intelligent world.
This is the work ahead.
Foresight and willingness are two inherent powers that we possess – the human capacity to develop prescience through practice, experience, and knowledge, and fierce zeal to align intention with effort, like that of a mighty lion!
This may be some of the most meaningful work of our time!
