Most people remember Thomas Jefferson as the author of the Declaration of Independence. But after 1776, he helped shape something else entirely: American diplomacy.

As the first U.S. Secretary of State under George Washington, Jefferson believed the United States should be a “beacon of liberty” to the world, a nation whose values at home guided its actions abroad. His diplomatic experience in France later helped pave the way for the Louisiana Purchase, one of the most consequential agreements in American history.

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, Jefferson’s story is a reminder that the founding of the United States did not end with independence, it continued through ideas, diplomacy, and leadership that shaped the nation’s future.
