An update from the Philippines, 1 week on
Last Monday, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao on the very first day of the new school year. 3.2 million children had their start to a new term turned upside down, and the nation continues the road to recovery. We're glad to share that no children sponsored through Compassion have lost their lives. Our local church partners are already on the ground, responding with practical support and steady presence. But the need is ongoing. Families are still displaced. Schools are damaged. Several aftershocks have continued to shake already frightened communities. Please continue to pray with us:

🙏For children still in evacuation centres
🙏 For families beginning to rebuild
🙏 For the local church to be a faithful and present source of hope in the hardest moments

We thank God that he is their refuge.

⚽ The World Cup kicks off today.

For Alejandro, football started as a dream.

As a child attending his local Compassion project in Honduras, he loved playing as a midfielder and dreamed of one day becoming a professional footballer.

Today, at just 18 years old, he's living that dream.

Alejandro now plays professionally in Honduras, but he hasn't forgotten where he came from. Alongside his football career, he spends time investing in younger players at his local Compassion project, helping them develop their skills and confidence on and off the pitch.

His advice?

*"Work hard, stay consistent, and never give up."*

We're cheering Alejandro on as he continues to inspire the next generation.

UPDATE: 8 June Philippines Earthquake

Hear from Edwin, our Compassion photojournalist on the ground, as he brings the latest update on how children and communities are doing in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Thank you so much for your continued prayers and support for the families and communities across the Philippines in the aftermath of the powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck on Monday.

We’re continuing to hear updates from our National Office and church partners, but we can confirm that every single Compassion sponsored child in the area has been accounted for and is safe.

While we praise God for their safety, the road ahead is incredibly challenging for many across the nation.

How you can help:

🙏 Please continue to pray for all those impacted, for those grieving loved ones for those who have lost livelihoods and those facing significant damage to their houses and churches.

🌍 If you feel moved to support practically, please consider offering towards the Disaster Fund. You can find the link here: https://bit.ly/43rs99m

Please join us in praying for the Philippines following a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Mindanao island early on Monday, 8 June.

Initial reports indicate that at least 32 people have tragically lost their lives and more than 130 have been injured.

We invite you to lift up in prayer those who are grieving loved ones, those who've been injured and families who've lost homes and livelihoods.

Please also pray for Compassion’s local church partners across Mindanao, that they'd be a source of strength, hope and practical support to their communities during this difficult time.

As always, we'll be in touch if the child you sponsor has been directly affected.

When disaster strikes, children living in poverty are often the hardest hit.

Floods, earthquakes, drought and conflict can leave families without shelter, clean water, food or safety in a matter of moments.

But even in the middle of a crisis, God is present. And through the local church, His love is reaching families with provision and hope.

Join us in praying for children and families living through uncertainty, and for the local churches continuing to serve their communities with courage and compassion.

This prayer from children in Guatemala will make your day! 🇬🇹
We’re passionate about discipling children and young people to understand the power of prayer and to know they can come to God in every moment.

Through our church partners, children are learning that they can always call upon God to provide for them, comfort them and guide them in their everyday lives.

At a project in rural Thailand, children and young people in Pakoiwa are taking the lead in caring for the environment in their community.

Thirteen-year-old Dawa is one of them. She began by learning how to separate waste and encouraging younger children to do the same. Step by step, these small actions are helping build greater awareness across the village.

From a young age, Dawa has felt a calling to care for the world around her. “The Bible says God created the world for us, and He created the Garden of Eden for us,” she says.

Motivated by her faith and a love for God’s creation, Dawa is part of a growing movement of young people learning what it means to care for the world around them, starting right where they are.

We love hearing stories like Dawa’s, of young people being empowered to steward and love the communities they live in. Through church driven Compassion projects like this one, children are supported to thrive and often go on to become change makers in their communities.

You can join us in helping make a lasting difference.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13

This promise reminds us that hope begins with God. As we trust in him, he fills us with joy and peace that go beyond our circumstances.

And that hope was never meant to stay with us alone. When God fills our hearts, it overflows into the lives of others.

Today we’re reminded that small acts of faith, love, and generosity can carry hope further than we imagine.
