The transducers convert electrical power into vibrations of the required frequency and amplitude. These values should be monitored at commissioning and at routine validation to proactively identify when deterioration occurs in the performance of the ultrasonic transduces.

Inadequate decontamination of bedpans, used in the clinical setting, may result in the transmission and spread of pathogenic organisms presenting severe consequences for the immunocompromised patient and in particular, the elderly and patients in long term care (Alfa et al., 2013).

Most notably, Clostridium difficile and Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) have been associated with several outbreaks of infection. In one reported outbreak of C. difficile, the highest rate of contamination in the environment was isolated to the toilet seats 33.3%, with the second highest level of contamination 25.9%, isolated to bedpans (Frawley et al., 2005).

ENISO15883-3 specifies the general requirements for performance of these washers.
