One day Garda Ombudsman, another day Gastrointestinal Unit. Us, terps, have to be so versatile. We know nothing and everything. We are no experts in law or medicine or construction or education. It’s impossible to be equally knowledgeable in the many different areas that we are often unexpectedly thrown into. However, we do gain great insights into many domains and have the privilege to sample the flavours of the work life of so many different professionals and individuals from so many walks of life. Our work is very challenging and almost never boring. And the biggest bonus is we always learn.

It’s reassuring to see the cardiovascular clinic is empty this morning. It must be the sun effect. Amazing summer has given everyone in Ireland a lot of joy and has surely had a positive influence on our health and wellbeing! May it continue for a few more weeks!

Happy International Translation Day!!
Great webinar on AI and translation yesterday organised by FIT (International Federation of Translators) giving us hope that we are not so easily replaceable. Apart from data protection issues, AI cannot recognise human emotions which convey nuanced albeit significant messages and so are crucial when interpreting. Instead of perceiving AI as a threat, we should see it as a tool that can greatly enhance our work. Comparison can be drawn to the invention of the calculator which did not put mathematicians out of work. There is hope, fellow translators and interpreters! Stay calm and keep working and learning! Your work matters as it brings people together. All the best to all translators and interpreters around the world!
