As God’s representatives and ambassadors, it’s so important as Christians that we finish well. How we finish in life can determine our legacy and lay a good foundation for future generations — our families, communities, and nations.
You’ll most likely be remembered for how you finish in life rather than your start, or middle.
In the Bible we see many examples of Kings who started well but sadly ended badly.
Common reasons for failing to finish well —
• Pride
• Spiritual drift
• Compromise
• Isolation
• No accountability
• Disobedience
King Saul started well and was described as being humble but finished up letting pride and fear override God’s word.
King Solomon started well, asking for God’s wisdom and discernment rather than wealth and power but finished up with a heart full of compromise chasing after idols.
King Hezekiah started well. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He dismantled the pagan high places, restored worship and witnessed the Lord answer prayer in miraculous ways. Yet, he had a major stumble towards the end of his life. With a heart full of pride, he refused the counsel of others which led to negligence that negatively impacted future generations.
If you’re looking for an example of a King who started well and finished well look no further than King Jesus. The ultimate example and representative of God. (Hebrews 1:3)
From His first breath to His final cry of victory on the cross He epitomised a life lived well. What a legacy He has left to a broken world in need of restoration through a perfect Saviour. The sole foundation for Salvation!
While we will never attain perfection this side of eternity we can look to Christ’s example in order to learn how to start well, and finish well. (1 Peter 2:21)
He kept a close relationship with the Father, praying daily and studying the scriptures.
Christ didn’t compromise. He surrendered to the Father’s will. Even when it cost Him everything.
He humbly served others and loved unconditionally.
He showed forgiveness, even to those who nailed Him to the cross.
He sought to glorify God the Father in all that He did.
For the joy that was set before Him, He endured to the end!
His life is unrivalled and unmatched. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives within each Christian.
Choose every day to walk in the Spirit, following Christ’s example, and finish well.
Oh to hear Christ speak these words over you and I when we breathe our last breath — “well done good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23)
